Note: This file is garanteed without any influence of EMI song books, wich

THE TRIAL
(Waters/Ezrin)
Pink Floyd
from The Wall 1979

Hi, fans!

Here is another Floyd tune, I'd like to explain one thing or two
(I always explain lots of things, perhaps a kind of justification?
SomeOne must have told me I were useless or somewhat in my childood)

1) It's stupid to try to play this tune without an orchestra! but
I guess I'm not the only stupid guy on heart, so Ok, play it
for example on a synth (strings are good, power strings are better).
I sometimes play it on organs, but I play it mainly on piano,
and that works pretty well! Some can try to play it with guitar/Bass
/Drums, It sure can do the job. I recently started to learn accordion,
you couldn't believe how nice it sounds on that thing!

2) What's that thing? Well, we all saw .CRD files with just chords
& lyrics, Ok, fine, but that's not enough here, 'cause strings are
playing a melody wich is different from the vocal one, I believe
that this part definitly IS the song, so I tried to indicate it here.
How does it works? It's quite simple: there's 3 lines
| Chords...
| strings melody & '|' is the bar line
| Lyrics
In melody:
n means nOPE, nO note, at least with the right hand, play 1st or 5th
with left hand instead.
- means Let ring.
+ means play this note an octave higher (all is played between F & E)
L.H. means that this prt of melody is played by left hand

3) How do I play it? It's pretty simple again (complicated things are
bothering me (except these explanations)):
the left hand is for the bass line:
alternate 1st & 5th of each chord + chromatics
the right hand is for the melody:
indicated notes + thumb playing any note of the actual chord,
1st mainly but it can be any.
Let's take a closer look at the beginning:

B Bb B B Bb B | B Bb B C B A G |
Right hand: - E E - E E | - E E E E |
-------------1-----2-----3-----4----|-1-----2-----3-----4-----|
Left hand: E B E B | E B E B |

Well, that's a simplification but you can see what I mean.

4) I've seen .CRDs with the tune in Fm, I've written it as Em, as it's
the way I'm playing it and it's much more floydian (think of WYWH,
Welcome.., Atom Heart Mother, ..Turning away,Pigs , among others).
If that bothers you, translate, retune your synth or put a capo on
your piano!

[intro is the first two lines repeated]

Ok....I've actually felt like I've been in a similarly unstable mental state, where you start to question everything including your sanity. It's kinda scary when you feel like this song and the characters from your own past are putting you on trial!

This is such an awesome song; I love the broadway sound to it, like its some kinda fucked up showtune or whatnot. A lot of other Pink Floyd fans who haven't seen the Wall (and thus probably aren't really Pink Floyd fans - at least the ones I know) hate this song because they think its stupid and makes no sense, but to fully understand how it ties in with the rest of the songs you'd probably have to see The Wall, which is a kickass movie by the way.

It's also about him realizing how far gone he is, the emerging from his self-imposed exile.

The Wall album is obviously a story. You can't listen to one song without understanding it as part of the whole - and this is the best example. On a metaphorical level, the story of Pink is about his growing up and all of the factors that built the wall around him alienating him from everybody, and all the 'bricks in the wall' which made him insane. This track is the accumulation of the whole thing! His eventual mental breakdown. All of the things that have been building up throughout the album come back to haunt him and flips him over the edge. And this is a great way to go out!!

Basically, the wall was a soundtrack for the movie. The movie was about this guys struggle with insanity, and his flashbacks. This song is when he completely loses his mind. "The Wall" is the mans life, and each brick a memory. If you didnt know that, keep that in mind next to you see the movie.

JesseDC : interesting opinion that the wall is a bit like The Matrix. I think this song means that Pink is so screwed up by the life he has led. Be it from drugs, stress his upbringing(parents, teachers, and girlfriends. That he is forced to confront his demons. and only then can he be free to be who he is.

"Bobsaget666 dont be a dumbass the album was released in 1973 and the movie came out in 1982" Huh? Dark Side came out in 73, not the wall. the wall came out in 79,and the movie in 82. Roger wrote the album for the movie. the movie wasn't released until 82 tho. in case u didn't know,

This song is really cool, it really doesn't have any guitar or drums in it. But something about it is really apealing.

He realizes that he built the wall, and he doesn't need it, but it was revealed to him by those who gave him reason to build it: his power-hungry schoolmaster, his cheating wife, and his control freak mother. Nice little twist of irony there, isn't it?

In case you people didn't know, the album "The Wall" is about a government agency that starts to take over and makes everybody the same like 'another brick in the wall.' By the third track on the first cd they get Pinks Mother and Father. During the trial it is not pinks real mother speaking but a replacement mother the gov't gave him when they made his mom a "brick." The wall represents how everyone in is the same. The trial is when they finally catch Pink and destroy the wall and he wakes up and realizes it was all a dream
