Welcome my son,
(C) (Em)
welcome to the machine
(C)
Where have you been?
(Am) (Em)
It's all right, we know where you've been
(C)
You've been in the pipeline filling in time,
(Em)
Provided with toys and scouting for boys
(C)
You bought a guitar to punish your ma,
(Em)
And you didn't like school,
And you know you're nobody's fool

| It's talking about the musical machine and how basically the record companies control their musicians. | |

| I totally agree with HOFspeedwolf. In my view songs mean different things to different people and this song for me means like: life is so typical and repetitive, and it's like were all robots, views are instilled into our head, etc. And it's like he's welcoming his son to adult life. You have to work, have to do this, etc. | |

| This song is kinda creepy in that this could actually happen. What if one day machines told us exactly what to do and watched our every move. That's pretty creepy. I think we're pretty close to that right now. | |

| I think dmbgirl is right! right on. "Where have you been? It's alright, we know where you've been. You've been in the pipeline, filling in time, provided with toys and 'Scouting for Boys'." right there it tells you that the gov.t and major companies are trying to bribe them by giving them "toys" and that they always know what is goin on and the reason they made this song sound so creppy and dreadfull is because the idea they are trying to prove is creepy | |

| SNOCORE YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. It talks about how the business takes in ones dreams and then just makes them seem almost like a nightmare and its almost as if Pink Floyd was saying, "Sorry for giving you such dreams, because its not all fun like we make it seem". | |

| I always had two kind of thoughts on this song. Number one was how record companies control the musicians. My number 2 thought was that when syd barrett came into the rock scene that he never knew that people wanted to control him so much, hense the name welcome to the machine. | |

| My view of the song is a little different from most of these. To me it seems like its just talking about how when you're a young, you think you have everything figured out and you want to grow up to be rich and famout. "you bought a guitar to punish your ma...you didnt like school, and you know youre nobody's fool". And in the end you have no choice because it is not up to you whether someone picks you to be a big rich and famous rockstar and you must grow up and do exactly what you thought would never have to. "Welcome to the machine" is basically saying, "youre not a kid anymore, welcome to the real world you can either get a job you hate or be poor and homeless and not be able to do anything you want...your choice" | |

| but the reference he does make to the controlling machine over other bands and that "formula" band like new found glory or simple plan is in the song "gravy train" which i think is placed on that cd right after this song. "oh by the way which one's pink?" is in that song, and thats basically saying that the record companies will try to make you into a formula band (some of which i alredy named, but others were boy bands and singers like brittany spears and jessica simpson for a while) so that u can sell even more to make their money. | |

| I always got the impression that all of "Wish You Were Here" was about Syd Barret, I think you could probably make that connection with this song. | |

| I think everyone has said some really good stuff about this song. I definitely think it has to do with the music industry and there control over the musicians but i also think it is talking about the world as a whole. People are controlled by the way society wants them to act. The song is saying "we know where youve been" and "we know what you've dreamed" because thats where they told them to go and thats what they told them to dream. Its a great song with alot of meaning to it. People should take this song to heart and realize that we need to not let our lives be ruined. Be yourself. And i really dont think this song is about machines in reality, that was all a metaphor. | |
