Pink Floyd - Learning To Fly (Gilmour, Ezrin, Moore, Carin)

G A/G G Gmaj7 Em7 D

G A/G G Gmaj7
Into the distance, a ribbon of black

Em7 D
Stretched to the point of no turning back

G A/G G Gmaj7
A flight of fancy on a windswept field

Em7 D
Standing alone my senses reeled

G A/G G Gmaj7
A fatal attraction is holding me fast, how

Em7 D
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?

C Em/B Am G
Can't keep my eyes from the circling sky

F C D
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

G A/G G Gmaj7

G A/G G Gmaj7
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings

Em7 D
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything

G A/G G Gmaj7
No navigator to guide my way home

Em7 D
Unladened, empty and turned to stone

C Em/B Am G
A soul in tension that's learning to fly

F C
Condition grounded but determined to try

Em/B Am G
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies

F C D
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

F Am7 D9 D

G
Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,

Em7
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,

G
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly

Em7
Out of the corner of my watering eye

G
A dream unthreatened by the morning light

Em7
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

C Em/B Am G
There's no sensation to compare with this

F C
Suspended animation, a state of bliss

Em/B Am G
Can't keep my mind from the circling skies

F C D
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

G A/G G Gmaj7 Em7 D

Oh, and just to add on, if you read/listen to the last line "theres no sensation to compare with this, suspended animation, a state of bliss..." its most def refering to being stoned.

why can't they appreciate something, and write a song about it? i've never flown my own airplane, but this song really makes me want to try it.

This is mind blowing music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Went to a Waters concert last year, have to say it was every bit as good, well almost, as a Floyd concert.

what is so amazing about this song to me is that it sort of makes you feel like you are flying. the ups and downs in the melody and in the vocal track just seem to sweep and soar. love it.

there are a couple mistakes and/or ify parts of the lyrics of this amazing song.. this line: "standing alone my sense reeled" i thought was supposed to be "standing alone, my senses real." and whether it is "soul in tension" or "soul's intention"... idk tho, no matter what the exact meaning of the song, all i know is that it is a beautifully written song.

In a retrospective of Pink Floyd that was broadcast nationally on radio about 5 years ago, Gimour stated he wrote the song when he was learning to fly. the song is pure poetry, lyrically it is brilliant. it helped me through a creative writing calss in high school and I plagerized from it fully, the teacher thought I was a genius. The only inuendo is in the minds of druggie fans constantly searching for drug references and seeing them wwhere there are actually none. The guitar work makes the song worth listening too alone, brilliant as always, Gilmoure is.

It might not be as pedestrian as you think i also heard that along with gilmour and masen both being pilots it was sortof a metaphor for david gilmour learning how to 'pilot' pink floyd after waters departure.

Actually, it has inuendo, the song is talking about flying (i.e. being high)
