I was...

F C
I was spending my time in the doldrums
F C
I was caught in a cauldron of hate
F Am
I felt persecuted and paralysed
G F
I thought that everything else would just wait

While you are wasting your time on your enemies
Engulfed in a fever of spite
Beyond your tunnel vision reality fades
Like shadows into the night

To martyr yourself to caution
Is not going to help at all
Because there'll be no safety in numbers
When the Right One walks out of the door

D F Bb Am Bb Dm F D

C G
Can you see your days blighted by darkness?
C G
Is it true you beat your fists on the floor?
C Em
Stuck in a world of isolation
D C
While the ivy grows over the door

So I open my doors to my enemies
And I ask could we wipe the slate clean
But the tell me please go fuck myself
You know you just can't win

A true epic, perfect build up to the High Hopes on the Division Bell album.

One of the greatest composition of Pink Floyd ive ever heard...i think its about the stuggle of life, how we create our own prison while trying to compete with others to reach the goal.. i dont know why they wrote those in caps but i think the tried to emphasize and indicate certain individual like a leader or somone guardian in our life...i may be wrong though

I'm sad for sambennallick in consideration of the anger that has been introduced within the scope of peaceful reflection and contemplation of the remarkable talent encompassing the artists, musicians and those who appreciate the beauty in it all. With that said, I've come here because this song often comes to mind when I feel introspective. When the stars have aligned in such a way that the mood of loneliness and sense of loss prevail, the lyrics and instrumentals reach to me in such a way that simply drowning in it becomes the only elixir for its remedy. Those are my two cents - anyone have change? Peace :)

if the R.O. does stand for Roger, the lines make perfect sense - now, looking back, Glimour realizes how much PF lost when they lost Waters... "but they tell me to please go fuck myself / you know you just can't win" could be a reference to moments when PF tried to get RW to come back (anyone know if they ever did ask him?) and RW declined the offer...

I think this is the best post-Waters song. Shame it doesn't get enough credit.

This song is about how unfair life can be sometimes, but you have to deal with it anyway, trying to find the best way. even if we fail sometimes! just one of the best songs ever!

I'm in love with this song. IMO it's probably about how enemity and hatred can ruin your life, and that you get nothing out of it at the end, except defeat and frustration. I dunno if it's true that this song is directed towards Roger Waters. Shasta101, I did notice the similarity of the Wish you were here intro, but that's probably just a co-incidence. Same band after all! (Almost!)
