Am Em
It's all right, we know where you've been.

You've been in the pipe line filling in time,

Em
Provided with toys and scouting for boys.

C
You bought a guitar to punish you ma,

Em
And you didn't like school,

And you know you're nobody's fool.

Cmaj7 Em
So welcome to the machine.

Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7 ...

Welcome to the machine.

C
What did you dream?

A Em
It's all right, we told you what to dream.

Cmaj7
You dreamed of a big star.

Em
He played a mean guitar.

C
He always ate in the steak bar,

Em
He loved to drive in his Jaguar.

its reference to the "musical machine" or the record companies. Roger Waters talked about it in interviews.

Your right on man!! They are probably watching us right now. But i believe it is about how currupt everything is, and that as soon as we are born, we become part of this "machine" and just like the song says, they tell us what to dream, and they tell us they know where we have been. And i believe very strongly, that the only people that understand what is truley going on, are people that have lost their minds. It seems to me that they know something we dont, and the "machine" shut them down. anyone else have any ideas??

I have always thought the "Machine" was the government or society. When they say "Welcome to the Machine" I think they are saying like, "welcome to the bullshit that is life." The character in the song is going against the "machine" by buying a guitar (which in my opinion represents rock itself) and not like school (which is a government in itself) and also that he is "nobodys fool" which could mean he is rebellious to authority. But I dunno, thats just my opinion.

I feel this song is about how when you are born into a country, the government takes you to be part of their machine, but being rebellious you can do whatever you want, through music.

It is so scary that one day machines could be watching us and tell us what to do. Not just robots but the government. Probably talking about the gov't.

its definetly about the music business and corporate slave owners that take people and basically turn them into their little slaves or "robots" if you will. the machine is obviously the industry and they are just the little "parts" helping the machine churn and make the money.

This song, as Waters said, is about the record industry, just like "Freak on a Leash" or a number of other songs. I believe it can have multiple meanings too, much like the government, (espiecally in post-Patriot Act America). We're not far from "1984" or the Soviet Union, or even Nazi Germany, the song is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I think this song is about the way we humans live. You know, you are born. (Welcome, my son, welcome to the machine) You go to school. 8-15. 8-15. 8-15. 8-15 (STATIC!!) You grow up. Start to work. 6-16. 6-16. 6-16. 6-16. (STATIC!!) And it goes like that. We all grow up, to become "machines" and serve the government (We told you what to dream)

I feel that every song is different for every person. All people interperet everything differently, and we all have our own meanings for things. I just know this is a damn good song, and I've interpereted it differently when I've listened to it depending on my mood, haha. But I do have an interesting story about this song, I had a friend go to a Floyd concert, and during this song, he was on LSD, there was a big (blinding he says) white light coming from the stage. He thought that the music was the machine coming to get him, and that the band was trying to warn him to run away, but he couldn't escape it (the light) and started freaking out. He hasn't done LSD ever since. HA

I think the machine is a metaphor to the music business Roger Waters had to endure. at the end of the song the elevator goes up and the you hear all the people talking, drinking etc. Then it goes into have a cigar which is obviously about the record label owner telling "Pink" (haha, which ones Pink?) that he (ahem) really loves the band and that they're making a lot of money...

Definitely about the music business; obvious with the references to guitars.

i think its basically what was said, but only the record company didn't take control of him. obviously they couldn't have... its art rock and he'll do what he wants cuz its art. he fell into the "machine". the overrated view of the rich and famous life. yeah its definitally gotta be fun to jam out on stage letting your emotion flow out of an instrument or your lyrics, but its still got its downsides that are not shown on tv. he's just saying how common it is to rebel against school, and try to get back at your mom for punishing her back by being bad and uncontrolable, and one thing she can't control is his music. no one can control his music. so welcome to the machine of being a musician. they know where he's been in his youth, and they told him what to dream so they could use him to make money. they are the music company, and different forms of entertainment.
