| Love this. This is by far the best Placebo-song out there. I think that he sings about his usually-one-sided-love; how he falls in people he can't get... 'cause "he's in the basement" and the other is "in the sky". After rejection, he "falls apart and counts to ten" and then tries again, although knowing it will be futile. He hopes that the one he loved would "drop on by" his life, but the other one is gone and never will be back. | |

| I think he's singing about an endless cycle of rain... Especially in england where it rains alot, even in summer. This cycle never changes. "fall apart and start again" | |

| Yeah, Placebo's songs have featured in a couple of films: Every You Every Me - Cruel Intentions 20th Century Boy - Can't remember lol English Summer Rain...probably my all-time favourite Placebo song, well the new version is anyway. In the version that was on the ESR singles and on Once More With Feeling, while Brian is singing 'Start Again, Start Again' over and over again, there is also a voice in the background whining much like The Bitter End. This voice is saying something like: 'And I can't sleep without Your breathing And I can't breath each Time your leaving Please...you won't stay away Won't you come back to me someday...' To me, this is implying that the guy they are singing about (presumably Brian) has just been dumped by a girl and has tried to live without her, but that his life is empty, bland and 'routine' since she has left, and he can't accept that she has gone. In the end, he resorts to telling himself that she hasn't gone forever and will come back to him one day. In the animated video (which doesn't actually have anything to do with Placebo themselves, it was made by a South African college student), there is a quick shot of the guy with a red-headed girl laying on top of him. This is the memory of her he is having. Again, just my interpretation... | |

| I think this song is about a guy who likes a girl, but she doesn't even note him. That's the "I'm in the basement, you're in the sky" part. Every time he try to get closer to her, he "falls apart", and start again and again. The methaphor of the rain is 'cause the rain represents the bad times, and the bad times never ends. | |

| Placebo are a great band to watch play live, their music is so origional yet so appeling. With lead singer Brian's amazing voice, and the great music they play. Placbo remind me of being young and carefree. Plus English Summer Rain for me is a great track to listen to whilst driving. | |

| I'm listening to the Freelance Hellraiser Remix, and I think of how he is in hell while the girl he loves is in heaven. (I'm in the basement, you're in the sky.) Water is also a symbol of sex, and if he thinks of rain, then it must be constant. I definitely think this has something to do with sexual frustration. Holding your breath also implies taking a plunge. I like the Freelance Hellraiser Remix a lot more than the original. We play it at work (I work at Express) a lot. But it's hard to find on-line! | |
