This song is one of the most reflexive songs you can find out there. heres the fact of the matter: drugs ARE bad for us. we LIKE drugs alchohol IS bad for us. we LOVE alcohol there are wayyy to many addictions in this world. we have to preotect OURSELVES for our own good. and alot of us aren't able to. im as guilt as more than half the people rading this. Here is a French group knowing whats goint on. and he isn't stupid. he knows he needs help just like we all do. all in all, i love this song!

i always thought this song was about the time after a relationship where you just feel like shit, and don't want to do anything. you want to get back with your ex, but you know it would be worse that way, so i think that's where "protect me from what i want comes in". the whole anti-americian thing works better though.

I needed about 2 listens before i started to really enjoy it ;] Though i was kinda skeptic at first , i think the new album will be ok , so im really looking forward to it ... welcome back , placebo !

interestingly brian i wouldn't say he is american. his father is american, his mother is scottish and he was brought up in luxembourg. so i'd call him european (thank god).

I think this number is a protest to conformity expecially in the American culture. Brian has loudly voiced his isn't always proud to be an American and is very anti-war. And I really think he isn't a conformist. I definatly think this song is a protest to conformity.

i think that this song is about drugs. "It's that desease of the age" drugs are like a new disease that effects people of this new age "It's that desease that we crave" the people all know that its bad, but they still want to use drugs. they put temporary pleasure over their overall wellbeing "Alone at the end of the (race is wrong) rave" after the drug fuelled rave, everyone has gone, and the user in this story is left feeling alone and empty "We catch the last bus home" "Corporate America wakes" i love this line, it gives me the feel of a waking busy city, everybody is rushing around, and nobody takes the time to slow down and live a bit. perhaps the user feels seperated from these people, which further drives him/her to take drugs "Coffee republic in case" "We open the latch on the gate" its morning and the user has finally made it home, exhausted and coming back down "Of the hole that we call our home" naturally the user is not happy to be home, i get the feeling that this song is describing him/her in a lifestyle that they hate "Protect me from what I want..." "Protect me protect me" they dont want to be the same as the rest of the world in one way, but they want to lead a normal life and not wreck their life also. taking the drugs seems to seperate them from this life, but they always have to face it afterwards. so the user is torn between taking drugs and not taking them, so he/she needs someone to protect them from the drugs

A Song To Say Goodbye appeals to me more because I prefer more.. slower, creepier songs that make me think. I don't know how you could download the album leak :P It's torture not doing so but I prefer to have something physical in my hands to listen to. I mean, I've been waiting for this album since OMWF (Not long admittedly but we only got 2 new songs from that). Anywhoo, a good song still.

I want to say that this song is about some kind of drug addiction definitely. "Protect me from what I want" to me, means "keep me away from this drug" or some kind of asking for help getting over an addiction. I want to say this song is about a person who is remembering the life they had with these "drugs" or whatever, and they are "all alone" without it, but they know it's for the better. I guess this song could really fit into whatever you want to believe it is though...

this song reminds me of ravenloft books where you have to be careful what you wish for ravenlofts dark powers may hear you and make your wish come true in a way that it does not always please you as you thought it would.i guess this song deals with a kind of life we all live:we drink coffe to be awake(coffee republic)in our places we call homes(hole we call home)houses used to be bigger, you know.maybe he is yearning for an ordinary life, but at the same time he knows that its going to kill him, therefore ''protect me from what i want''. good song.

its like coming home after going clubbing or getting really wasted and just reflecting on the stupidity of it all. "protect me from what i want" reminds of lots of things.....drugs, cutting, alcohol, anything addictive really. its like the thing you love the most is the thing you must be protected from.

I'm thinking it's about someone being stuck in a life they want out of. Like, a job they hate and a home they can't stand. "Maybe we're victims of fate Remember when we'd celebrate", he remembers his youth and regrets that it's over. He's grown up now, with a life he hates, but wants to be protected from what he ACTUALLY wants. Yeah. I don't know.

Umm I am not sure where to put Lyric corrections so I am just putting them here, it is just the first verse that is a little wrong: It's that disease of the age It's that disease that we crave Alone at the end of the rave We catch the last bus home

It works pretty well as a drug-addiction thing, but also as a reaction against american culture... but to me, "protect me from what I want" smacks of drug addiction

I agree with poison girl13 and Edenfer! This is about a person that during their youth do not care about having a relationship, kids, whatever, but when age comes, and it cames really fast, he realizes that life has passed him by. And it was made of drinking, drugging, one night stands... Worthless. He cannot even stands his own house. Try to listen to the french version 'cause it is more beautifil and has more details to understand the song.

Could be unplanned pregnancy after a big night out. "protect me from what i want" could mean use a condom, but he didnt, and now the girl is pregnant and is claiming child support from the man because they don't want to get married "wedding bells aint gonna chime/with both of us guilty of crime/and both of use sentenced to time/and now we're all alone"

I love this song more than anything. I think its about this new era that we live in and all we can do is drink and get high and sleep around and soon enough we've wasted our whole lives doing that, so that when we're old we're alone because all our relationships were worthless one night stands. Hence the lines :"maybe we're victems of fate, remember when we'd celebrate, we'd drink and get high until late, but now we're all alone. Wedding bells ain't gonna chime, with both of us guilty of time and both of us sentenced to time and now we're all alone"

I think it's about the absudity of modern life. We all engage in different addictions but in the end our lives remain empty and worthless. The "protect me from what i want" stands for protect me from my desire to die. He feels so alone and stuck in a cycle he can't leave that he can only wish for death...
