Uncle Toms Cabin is a novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Surely worth the read.

i agree with joeytheboy. that verse is a play on words.i think the whole song is just taking the piss out of various things. some being chrisitanity, self help books, america, rasism, his mother. i like the whole tune to this song it has quite a serious feeling to it even though i think its taking the piss. very interesting.

no! you have it all wrong!! he hates his mother because she is constantly preaching her christian ways, and she is mad at him for being bisexual. he had a really fucked up child hood, his father was never home and his mom was screwed in the head.

the verse about "mommy" really cleverly plays on words; "all the times she showed me wrong" because ur parents are supposed to teach u right and wrong but he only got shown wrong by his mother, as in she showed him what not to do by doing it. "hello mom" follows "thankyou mom" bucause saying "hello mom" is what everyone says when they have a chance to get famous or whatever just the same way he is saying "thankyou mom" because he is simply expected to, but at the same time it is ironic as he is obviously being sarcastic. "mom" is quite likely to be metaphrical for the mother country, the counry which gave birth to him and his nation, if what "darkeyes" above said is right, i dont think anyone could be proud of slavery in their history so he is having a go at his heritage, by having a go at his mother.

there's this interview in which brian said that he was watching tv and there was this documentry about how hard it is for people to get their first novels published, and that's what inspired this song. he said that he usually plays his acoustic guitar when he's watching tv, and he started writing: "i wrote this novel just for you/sounds pretentious but its true..." and i think the line "all the mommy things she's done..." is soo cute :)

I think this song is about someone who is depressed about how they have lived there lives. The term "novel," refers to their life. The person is saying this "novel" was wrote so badly because of the way people and the world has showed her wrong. When they finally look back at it -" I read a book about the self." They realised that they "dont care for" themself.
