Placebo - Infra-Red
Tabbed by: Jake (gingerboffinjake@hotmail.com)
This is not only the first tab of this song, but it's also my first tab for
so I hope i've done well. This is a kick-ass song so listen to it, if not any Placebo. This was
half by ear, half by watching the video.
This is how to play it in Standard tuning (EADGBe), but this isn't the actual tuning
I think. It might be played 2 steps down.

| I think this song is a about a person who has wronged Molko many times. So much so that their actions are beginning to get predictable and Molko isn't going to stand aside and take the abuse (physical/emotional, etc) anymore, he's fighting back. He's using the analogy of "Infra-red" as a way of saying he can see clearly what this person is going to do/say to him next. There's no use in this person running because he can "see in the dark", or knows exactly what this person is doing, is going to say or where they will be next. I agree with the above that this song is a threat. He's telling the person that he's ready this time for this person's attack and they should basically be scared. His taunting of "Someone call the ambulance, there's going to be an accident", is pretty much "Be afraid, I'm going to get you back this time." The "accident" verse is Molko telling the person that it was a mistake to mess with him, and as a result of the mistake there's now going to be an "accident." That's what I think. | |

| In the first verse he says "One last thing before I shuffle off the planet, I will be the one to make you crawl"... I think he's already decided to kill himself but want to take out the person who drove him to this insanity first, like a murder/suicide. | |

| If you`re talking about famous references in the lyrics, if I`m not mistaken, "So I came down to wish you an unhappy birthday" is a reference to The Smiths` "Unhappy birthday". | |

| Yes, it is about insanity, but just listen to the catchy beat of this song!!! The way that Bribri is singing this makes me want to smile so huge, like, "Ohoh he's reeally having funn." So he's about to shuffle off the planet, right? If you don't "value" your own life, you damn right don't value someone else's [just a hunch, hehe], so he goes: "I will be the one to watch you fall" - which sounds like this is a pretty heart-happy ocassion for him. Oh, yes, and I also believe that this song points out the feeling of freedom. Whilst you have this whole rush of "Oh god I really want to do this", and you finally kill the person that you dreamt of killing so many times, you feel accomplished... At least until the freedom/"crazy" rush wares off and you're back to shitty reality again. *sigh* | |

| Nice idea about Peter Murphy there. Molko seems to have included a lot of references to other atrists on the album, the bloke from Nine Inch Nails on Post Blue and Neil Young on Song to Say Goodbye. Anyway, this is easily my favourite song on the album. I think it's stuck in the middle of their first album and Without You I'm Nothing personally, very dark feel to it. Should be the single after Drag though, it's very catchy! | |

| Infra-red is a type of radiation that has a longer frequency than red light and therefore is invisible to human eyes. Infra-red radiation however is produced by living things in the form of heat. In some forms of nightvision goggles (If you have played Rainbow Six for PS2 you will know what I'm talking about) infra-red radiation is picked up to show the user where living things are in the dark. Since all living things produce heat, infra-red vision can see people in the dark. The army uses this technology all the time. I believe this song is a threat, but however the writer claims to have some ability to be able to detect infra-red radiation, allowing him to "see in the dark" and his victim cannot therefore hide in the dark. In summary, this song is about a man who is driven mad about to commit suicide, but before he commits suicide he is going to hunt down this victim. He has an extra sort of vision (or perhaps the ability to see infra-red is just a metaphor for a special power lent to him by his madness) allowing him to hunt down his victims and there is nowhere to hide. | |

| Drewskee also has a VERY valid point. Perhaps this is a song to the NWO, meaning that the singer may have been in the dark before, but now he has the power to see in the dark and therefore see the NWO's plans. The ability to see infra-red radiation to see things in the dark may be a very suitable metaphor for the darkness being lifted and the ability to see someone's scheming. | |

| woo! first post... well infa-red is a lform of colour that is past our vision of sight on the spectrum. So basically its something that is there, but cant be fully seen. Brian sings that he is infa-red, and that we cant hide, because its something we cant see, and we fear the unknown. the person in the song is running away from something they dont want to see or accept. WOOOoo.. great song! | |

| Interesting fact: Molko said that this was the first song he has written backwards. Meaning he started at the end and wrote it back to front. I dunno if that has anything to do with the actual meaning of the song, but there you go! | |

'One last thing before I shuffle off the planet I will be the one to make you crawl So I came down to wish you an unhappy birthday' This reminds me of BrickShithouse... about the dead lover who is watching. | I think lightdivided pretty much nailed it. This is a song about vengeance. Someone wronged the lead singer and emotionally scarred him and then tried to escape responsibility ("There is no running that can hide you"). He wants whoever wronged him to feel the same pain he's felt ("came down to wish you an unhappy birthday" / "crash and burn your beggar's banquet") The chorus is saying that he is so familiar with the pain and loss inflicted by the person who wronged him, that it no longer disorients him. In a sense, he is numb to it, and it's a part of himself (his vision). He has adapted to the pain. He is so familiar with the darkness, he can see in it and think clearly (calculate plans for revenge). It also hints at the fact that the darkness (emotional pain) he was subjected to is now his asset as he will use it to surprise the other person, who presumably, by escaping responsibility, is guilt free and cannot see in the dark. Awesome song. Makes me think of my ex and also of the tale "The Count of Monte Cristo."

| This song is a threat, pure and simple. Given the tone and theme of the album, it is probably about a psychotic (likely the person mentioned in "Meds" who, well, forgot their meds) who is after someone who made him angry. "Coming up on infra-red" is a way of saying you're about to lose it, and he continues the metaphor with "I can see in the dark." The biggest question I have is about the line, "I came down to crash and burn your beggar's banquet." Is this possibly an intentional reference to the legendary Beggars Banquet label? Perhaps something about Peter Murphy? | |

| "One last thing before I shuffle off the planet I will be the one to make you crawl" Makes me think that he's going to make someone beg for forgiveness/mercy before he (or she, it could be either.) ends his/her life. It's quite simple really - the person is going to attack somebody else. and even if this 'somebody else' is okay, there is going to be an 'accident' anyway! Well, that's my thoughts on it. | |

"me... and some of the masses are starting to c your master plan... we can c in the dark... it's no secret anymore. just watch the video and u will c...

| It appears that the psychotic main character of the song intends on committing suicide (as in the first line) but taking the other person out at the same time as an act of vengeance, making it look like an 'accident'. I think thats where the 'infra-red' theme comes in, that is that someone being killed occurs, but you don't see the intent behind the supposed 'accident'; just as infra red is there but you don't see it. | |
