i love this song, and i always thought it was about a guy and a girl who were having a relationship full of bondage/submission etc. and then they broke up. wierd, its probably the video that gave me that thought.

i never really got what this song meant, but everyones comments have helped a bit. when i first heard it, i thought the line went " with cigarette burns on HER chest, and thought that she might have been in an abusive relationship and killed herself, although i realised it wasn't that after i figured out what the line actually said

my god. no one has commented on this? it's the epitome of poetry. if anyone knows the story behind this song, please tell me, especially the "farewell the ashtray girl" part.

I'm pretty sure that the whole James Dean idea is correct. The polaroid picture theory I'm also quite positive is correct, also the song is based around a woman finding a picture and just staring at it. I think that the song is about a one night-stand that Molko had once, and involved kinky sex (or something like that), and realises he falls in love with the girl overnight. Again, if you've seen the video, the woman's face (presumably the one at the start when Molko's having a flashback), is blurred out all the way through the song until the very end where Brian uncovers her true identity. The name 'This Picture' kind of gives it away that it's about a photo. I never knew about the photo at the Placebo gig story (thanks by the way), but I'm now almost certain that this is about it. Of course, my (very jumbled up) theory is most probably incorrect, but that's the way I saw it. This Picture is probably one of my top 5 Placebo songs, it really gets you thinking.

I read somewhere that it was something to do with James Dean... not sure if it's right though.

this song is a very mysterious sort of song... i'm not even sure all the verses are the same girl. but when i hear this song, i think it's about someone the singer knew a long time ago, and is worried about... in the first verse, i somehow got the impression she was on all fours and he was kissing the floor, that they were both under the control of a third party, real or metaphorical.... i guess i think they were both under the control of that third party or together in some way once, aren't there now, and he's here looking back thinking "whatever happened to her?" and maybe he can't remember her name, just a little of what she was like. like they were kids together or something. in my head, this song has a strong connection to the egl/lolita subculture, so that may have colored my meaning of it.

ok after only just 'discovering' placebo, i know i know, like where the fuck have i been? Anyways thouhgt this song was about relationships when i first heard it. Well the thing is i had a herion addiction for 13 years, i'm 38 and i aint jokin. This song is definatly about addiction, I can't explain it, it just fits. 'Beware this troubled world' Kissing the floor on all fours, 'whats wrong with this picture?' Users who are off it, in my circle of friends used to say to other users, i was kissin the carpet to indicate how off it they was. I cant really explain it i dont possess the vocabulary, but you know when something just fits? After listening to it a few times i had an epiphany and just KNOW its about addiction. Been there and done it see!

well i think that the video is very connected to the song ..the face that Brian uncovers at the end is the Italian actress Asia Argento who is his friend hence the lyrics "I wrote a poem that described her world That put my friendship to the test"..maybe it's about her?or an alter-ego of brian's?

OMG my fav song ever, my names from it SEE. For me it's in the same vein as Commercial For Levi in its emphasis on destructive relationships which have occured in the past. I think everythings been pretty much said about it so I'll leave you with saying that it's one of the best in my opinion, though I had to grow to love it.

The newspapers used to call James Dean "The Human Ashtray". I also think this song has a lot to do with the polaroid photo that a fan gave to Brian Molko after a concert. it's a photo of a girl with a black eye slumped on a table in an ugly purple room and scrawled across the bottom are the words "Kill, Fuck, Die". I think there's a message in this song for that girl. There's also some S&M ^_^
