Hi Guys I have got a couple of interpretations of my own.The song is based on a poem by Sam Lake(the writer of Max Payne). This song has very very dependent on Max Payne and isn't a separate piece of art. The "couple" they are talking about is no doubt Max and Mona.At the end of the game credits its written"Max Payne's journey through the night will continue".There are a dozen of references in the game to the word "night" ,like "waking up from the American dream etc etc"i.e. "Driving into the night" no doubt means Max's n Mona's crusade against evil. John Mirror is actually John Myrrh. And Myrrh is a reference to mirror i.e reflection.John Myrrh life resembles in many way Max Payne's. Also I think we shld take into acct fact that Mona is alive at the end of Max Payne 2(play DOA difficulty level) Chorus "Driving into night"=explained "Its a late goodbye"=To his wife.In the last scenes of Max Payne 2 Max says that he had a dream of his wife." She was dead. But it was alright." prob means that now after avenging his wife's death her memory cud now rest in peace. It took 2 games MP1 and 2 for him to say a final goodbye to wife! 1st para "In our headlights"=In our focus "bleak"=bleak "beer cans"= loneliness+depression(remember we kick the cans lying o the road while walking when we are alone n lonely n depressed) "deer's eyes"=hidden evil lurking around. A deer's eyes reflect like ghostly evil red eyes when our car's headlight reflects on them.(In India, I have often seen this with cows!) "Asphalt..plans..lies"= Past:- plans which have gone wrong. My lies is Max's guilt(his family's murder, his secretly helping Mona though she was a fugitive.) "lonely..by"=Expressing lonliness, life's passing by.Basically this probably deals with Max's life.He is miserable, in pain(physical n emotional) and always fighting/killing etc. 2nd para "hot..cheek.."=After Max and Mona kissed.ie. they are madly in love with each other. "made me strong..."=Mona's consistent help to Max in Max Payne 2 + emotional support "screaming..."=emotional turmoil 3rd para "devil.."=Fate/destiny in the negative sense."Dealt us" prob refers to cards i.e again an indication to luck/fate/destiny.Prob means that it was fated that we lead such lives. "flaming.."=Fate makes sure that Max will chase Mona and that is what he does throughout the game. "breathe easy..."=I cant be at rest till i forget the past, till that "John Myrrh" becomes pale memory. Comments are greatly appreciated I just love this game! And the song is great too!Sam Lake is an amazing writer.Hope to see the movie soon.

On the subject of the 'John mirror' line, I've heard in a few places that this song was written FOR Max Payne 2. Anyway, anyone who's played the game and listened to the various tvs will probably remember Address Unknown, in which the villan is called 'John Mirra'. I'm sure it IS refering to a toilet mirror, but still, I doubt it's a full coincidence.

Actually one of the mobsters says that it's because "he's in the John and he's looking at himself in the mirror" if you listen to his conversation before springing out into their view. Now moving away from the game for just a moment to focus on the song...yes, the game was well written but we have to see them as two separate pieces of art... The speaker has obviously made some mistakes in his life from the first stanza, partially due to his lies, but at the same time, time progresses on and the couple continues to move on. Perhaps also the other may have broken it off along the way, giving him not chance to say goodbye, so any farewell or closier for him is nonexistent, of which he is now lamenting. Which leads into the second verse, describing just that. The speaker now realizes what the other actually had done for them. By crossing "that line" (the boundary or wall that we all seem to hold in the modern world) and allowing themselves to love, they have been given strength of some kind. The third verse stands out to me (and also hits the closest to home for me personally). The devil's hand is basically all the problems he's gone through throughout the past, who also delights in seeing one run while he is hiding from his problems. But despite these uneasy feelings, one must allow themselves to love and to cherish that love; if you allow the troubles of your past to make you grow cold, you're going to see yourself one day in a bathroom mirror somewhere and stair at what you've actually become, an old, cold, bitter misanthropist, beyond the joys you could have had in your younger days. Even if that love is lost, you can still feel a kind of strength from it. Going back to the game, towards the end, Max even talks about what Mona had done for him. And I think there's something in the last line, "Last night, I had a dream about my wife. She was dead, but it was alright."

This song really is something. apparently it was based on a dream that Sam Lake had. Something very sentimental but painful resonates in this song. I would love to know what exactly Sam Lake dreamt, because it must have been powerfully inspirational. btw Max Payne IS one of the best games there is.

Guess, the john mirror is just a mirror in a toilet, isn't it? To me, the song is a symbol of flight, at attempt to escape, an eternal flight until one gets old and weak.
