Drop D tuning just like almost every one of Porcupine Tree's songs.
Intro & verse(s):
e-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D-----2-2-0-3---2-2-0-3---2-2-0-3-3---2-2-0-3---2-2-0-3---2-2-0-2-3-0---------------------
Repeat that part until "Something to lie about...". Then play:
e-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D-------------------2-2-0-2-3-0-------------------------------5---------------------------
A-------5-----3-----2-2-0-2-3-0-------5-----3-------5-----3-4-----------------------------
D-----0---3-4---4-3-2-2-0-2-3-0-----0---3-4---4-3-2---3-4---------------------------------
On that last "5", you could bend it if you want to cuz, to me, that sounds cooler.
Anyway, play that... twice, I think?... listen to the song. You'll get it.
[VERSE]
Then, on the bridge ("I'm getting feelings I'm hiding too well..."), go:
e----------------------------------------------------------------------|------------------
B----------------------------------------------------------------------|------------------
G---------------------5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5----------------------------------|----p.m.----------
D---0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0---5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5---3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3----------------|---0-0-0----------
A---0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0---3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3---3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3---0-1-0--------|---0-0-0----------
D---0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0---------------------3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3---------5-3-0--|---0-0-0----------
Play this part twice until the chorus. After the second time you play it,
palm mute the zeros until you get to:
e-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G---7-7---5-5---3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3---------------------------------------7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-----
D---7-7---5-5---3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3---7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7---0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0---7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-----
A---5-5---3-3---1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1---7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7---0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0---5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5-----
D---------------------------------7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7---0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-----------------------
Repeat that two times and then go back to the verse. That's it. Enjoy.

| How come no one mentions the screenplay by Steven Wilson and Mike Bennion? If any of you looked at the album from a filmmaker's point of view, all of the songs would make a hell of a lot more sense. | |

| I don't think that the Open Car is a metaphor, i think it's just meaning driving in a convertible in the summer, with someone you shouldn't be, and the wind blowing your hair etc, and they're going to a bar... duh.. Anyway, Deadwing is defenately the best PT album, I'm going to see them in April =] | |

| Some of the lyrics are wrong. The correct ones are: "You think you're smart, I think you're art, We agree on this" If you listen to any of the other songs, he obviously loves this girl who doesn't love him back. She just uses him. | |

| sounds like he wanted to have sex with this woman, then he had sex with this woman, and then afterward he felt awkward. that part is obvious. it also seems he already had a lover and now he has to hide this affair from her ("something to lie about, getting feelings i'm hiding too well"). after lying to his lover about the affair ("buried a heart shaped shell") he couldn't stand keeping this secret any longer ("something broke inside my stomach") so he told his lover about his affair and didn't care about the outcome after he admitted his sin (i let the pieces lie just where they fell"). i have no clue what the reference to the open car means though, someone please tell me! | |

| I think it is about an affair. That sounds like a good assumption. Open Car to me sounds like a reference to the affair where the woman is just a temporary passenger that sort of hopped in and could just as easily leave like that. Probably a stretch though. | |

| I personally believe that Deadwing is mostly about Incest. I think that this song is possibly the most obvious song on the album that reveals this theme. | |

| really dude... this doesnt point to incest at all.. just sex and feeling bad about it... sounds to me like the subject giving into lust and cheating the open car, i figured mean a convertable car with the top down. | |

| And the song itself is about a man who's lover died in a car crash, when they were driving out to a farm. Steven Wilson even said once, "Porcupine Tree music is very very simple. There's nothing complex about it at all. The complexity is in the production. The complexity is in the way the albums are constructed. All of the work goes into creating the texture and the sound, and making it sound right. There's nothing complicated about the music at all. And that's really why I have to take issue when people describe us as progressive rock. I don't think we are a progressive rock band. I think we're just a rock band. I think what leads people to give it that kind of progressive tag is the way the songs are produced." So why does everyone always think that PT is so deep and have hidden, complicated meanings in their songs? | |

| Yeah, I agree, I think it's about meaningless sex, and then, feeling bad about it. But whatever this song is about, it just fucking rocks. That chorus riff... the way it brings up the song, man... just makes me wanna rock the fuck outta myself. | |

| Tbrings: It's only obvious if you're a retard. This song is just about empty, emotionless sex. I'm sure we can all identify with it to some degree or another :( | |

| Yeah, but I think SW says that just not to be soo "underground". PT is one hell of a band, and almost all their musics are masterpieces. This is one of those. | |

| I think this song is about having sex with someone, and then afterwards having a rush of strange, mixed emotions like: Why did we do this? Do i love this person? love, hate, self-guilt, commitment, pitty, confusion, humiliation, joy, sadness. Sometimes the simple things mean as much or more than sex."Hair blown in an open car, Summer dress slips down her arm." really discribles something simple, and yet so meaningful and beautiful. I think that line is refering to when the 2 people leave the hotel room and drive away. The guy looks over at the girl, and sees the wind blowing through her hair and the dress slip down her arm. and feels guilty because she looks so innocent, even thow she prolly seduced him. So yes many mixed emotions. I also believe this girl knows something about him that is very personal about the guy | |

| Well, to me it sounds like It's about being in love with someone who is in the relationship for the physical aspects, and dosent really care about the narrator. | |
