| I love this song because I think the 2nd verse is stunning. It's the only verse in any song that I've heard that made me go "Yep. That is exactly how I feel right now." In college I had a short fling with a guy who I later became good friends with. Years later, we had one more lusty encounter. Two weeks later, he started dating this girl who made him stop talking to me because of it. ( she also made him quit talking to all his other friends too- but that's a whole other song) Prince said in 4 line what I wish I had the ability to tell that guy now. I still miss his friendship; what happened between us wasn't worth loosing him over; and I would never do anything to sabatoge what he has going- I respect his choices, even if I don't agree with them. If only I could pull of purple velvet, lace, pumps, and a geri curl like Prince then maybe I could win my ex friend over. But alas, I cannot. | |

| I agree with Calamity. I think the woman he wanted didn't feel the same way. I think she was a good friend and that ruined there friendship. I beleave when he uses the term purple rain he is refering to himself. | |

| This song is really emotional. I THINK... That it's about two people who at one time were friends, had a chaotic relationship, one or both of them got hurt... Neither wanted to let it go. So they were "weekend lovers" for a while despite being in relationships, but it wasn't fair to either one of them. He realizes they can't be friends or mess around- They need to let go and reach out for something else, but they don't really want to. They're prolonging their pain by hanging onto something that's gone. | |

| I hink he toyed with someone's heart and he's apologizing.. all he wanted was to play in the purple rain! The rain is symbolic though, of sweat beads perhaps... his faorite color is purple! But, this little love affair ended up wrong. (badly) So, he's trying to tell his "significant other" that he never meant to hurt them.. and that he wishes they are still "friends". At least, thats my interpetation. | |

| What I believe is that. He is in love with someone that doesn't feel the same as him. "Baby I could never steal you from another" It means that the woman he loves with already with someone else, and he that would not interfare. All he could do is just shower her with his love, and don't let his love for her stop her from doing anything else. But that's only my opinion. | |

| I have a personal meaning for this song, but I`m going to post it anyways. I had a boyfriend, we broke up, he got a new girlfriend, he and I had sex, he decided he couldnt trust himself with me and we couldnt be friends anymore. So this song means to me.... "I never wanted to be your weekend lover" he is saying he didn`t want to be something on the side interferring with what his lover had. ''I only wanted to be some kind of friend'' he wanted to be SOMETHING, anything.. because this person meant so much to them... ''Baby I could never steal you from another" he doesn`t wnt to take his lover from another because he knows that they are happy without him. "It's such a shame our friendship had to end" he knows he lost trust during the "weekend lover" fiasco and wishes that they could still have some sort of relationship. .....does that make any sense to ya`ll? | |

I think her marriage with her husband/boyfriend was not the way it's supposed to be, and he wants to show her what it's really about.
