Procul Harum - Whiter Shade of Pale
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabbed by: tezhall
Email: tez@affordablesupplements.co.uk
Tuning: standard
Another tab I've done without access to the CD, I was just playing around the
other day and this popped out, so I decided to put it up for people to correct or
use and abuse at their will. If it's crap I'm sorry, but it sounds kinda right
to me.
It's just the chords tho cos I haven't got the CD to tab it out properly.
CHORDS USED (I think the names are about right, where I don't know them I've just
put a guess with a ?
e|-3---3----3---3---0--0---0--0------2--2--3-|
B|-3---3----3---3---1--1---1--1------3--3--3-|
G|-0---0----0---0---0--0---2--0------4--2--2-|
D|-0---0----2---0---2--0---2--2------4--0--0-|
A|-2---0----2---2---3--2---0--0------2--0--0-|
E|-3---2----0---0---0--0---0--0------2--0--0-|
G G/F# Em7 Cm7? C C/G Am Am7? Bm D Dsus2
The general chord progression seems to just repeat around each verse and the
chorus as below
G G/F# Em7 Cm7?
We skipped the light fandango
C C/G Am Am7?
Turned cartwheels cross the floor
Bm D Dsus2
I was feeling kinda seasick
G G/F# Em7 Cm7?
The crowd called out for more
C C/G Am Am7?
The room was humming harder
Bm D Dsus2
As the ceiling flew away
G G/F# Em7 Cm7?
When you called out for another drink
C C/G Am
The waiter brought the tray
D D Dsus2 G G/F# Em7 Cm7?
And so it was that later
C C/G Am Am7?
As the miller told his tale
Bm D
That her face at first just ghostly
(D) G C G D
Turns a whiter shade of pale
The whole lot then repeats over for the next 3 verses...sorry I've had a stab at
getting the solo but harpsichord isn't the easiest thing to reproduce on a guitar
and I'm nowhere close!
Cheers,
Tez

The lyrics HERE today (05-25-2004) are FUBAR. If you navigate through www.procolharum.com ('Beyond the Pale', a Procol Harum fan site) you will find the authoratative lyrics as checked and amended by their writer Keith Reid. Also, there -- are a couple of verses that were not part of the original record.

I thought it was mirror told its tale as well, and I am sure I have seen that lyric elsewhere, but what the song is really about, and this is from one of the members of Procul Harem, is the recounting of a coast to coast flight in heavy turbulence with a service crew of trainee stewardesses (the reference there is the 16 vestal virgins) wherein everybody got violent motion sickness...no kidding

She said there is no reason and the truth is plain to see but I wander through my playing cards would not let her be just a correction. It is a good song. Actually has some emotion to it, unlike a lot of others on the radio.

I know that Keith Reid (the one who wrote the lyrics) was affected by the holocaust as his parents had to get out of germany and he never saw his grandparents again. I'm wondering if this song is about the horror of the holocaust coupled with a drug trip. But then again, he wouldn't let her be a virgin and she turned a whiter shade of pale so maybe it's life being confusing as hell or something coupled perhaps with a drug trip.

Are we for sure that it's "As the Miller told its tale"? I had thought it was "As the Mirror told its tale", and that the song was sort of a realization of the beholder....

Psycho_pr is the one who overdosed, it seems. I really, really want to know where the HELL these lyrics came from. They're not even remotely close to the real lyrics. But what's weird is that they're not just random gibberish; they have a common theme to them (choir practice), which makes it seem like the song was intentionally written as a parody. But, these lyrics cannot be found anywhere else on the Internet, which leads me to believe that Psycho_pr guessed at the lyrics by listening to the song... and just guessed very, very poorly.

alternate version: We skipped the choir practice And turned cartwheels cross the floor. I was feeling kind of seasick But the choir called out for more. The basses hummed harder And the tenors ran away When she called out for another song The basses ran away And so it was that later As the tenors told their tale That her face at first just Rosie Turned a whiter shade of pale. She said 'There is no reason, And the truth is plain to see,' That you haven't learnt your music And there is no excuse One of sixteen wee sopranos Who were leaving for the coast And although our ears were open They might just just have well been closed. And so it was that later As the tenors told their tale That her face at first just Rosie Turned a whiter shade of pale. its called tenors with way too much time on their hands!

Songs from the summer of love ('67) baby. Truely about a drug trip.

Azraeldrah is right - a lot of this song is an allusion to Canterbury Tales. The story has a number of medieval characters tell their tales - one of which is known as the Miller. The 'her' whose face turns pale probably refers to the Prioress (aka Nun) after hearing the Miller's bawdy tale. The virgins 'leaving for the coast' probably refers to the pilgrimage to Canterbury, England which the story is framed around.
