This is my favourite song on Truthless Heroes. The music is great but the lyrics are even better. It sums up the whole album. All through the album you have the "truthless hero" as he/she travels through life trying all these different things to try and fill the void in his/her life. And then right at the beginning the song says, "all that i've tried so hard to keep is all i've had to leave." Basically you can't rely on material objects to get you through life. When it says, "And all along here i was told that i could find...that i could find a hope inside this empty place" but really material objects don't help. You need Christ in your life to get you through things and to provide you with safety. Thats what it means to me anyways.

Everything that seems so important to us-- worldy things is what he fought so hard to keep. He is trying to open the eyes of his friend who does not have a relationship with God but it is too late b/c he has nothing to show from his life. We don't have anything to offer to the lost if we are delving in shallow things that make us hollow.

I believe this song is totally about the church. The character goes through life fighting for his/her faith when they've been taught doctrine that's not theologically sound. The second part, "I know you can't hear me, and you won't believe me" is the character's attempt to cry out to the church to change its ways. Either the character is dying or perhaps Christ has come back and he/she believes it is too late to change. The chorus of the song is the character's hopeless belief that the church might never again become what it is meant to be. "Forever we will be hollow." Then the part "How can we open the eyes of the dead when we are hollow?" is definitely a reference to every believer's mission to seek and save the lost. Finally, the reason I believe this song is about the church, is the last part. "And all along here I was told by fallen men in their charade that I could find a hope inside the safety of this empty place." So church, let's start teaching people the right things! Our mission is to seek and save the lost, not entertain people.
