this song is about a little girl who is molested by her father..and then she cuts and eventually kills herself. hence the ''digs the shiv..'' and the father feels the guilt and knows the suicide is his fault because ''The guilt she manifests so deep inside you That your thin veneer of catechism can no longer hide'' ...meaning his christianity can't save him from his guilt for doing that to his own daughter. when it says ''Celebrating her exit From the benign sense of self she once knew Raising her heavy glass (Raising her heavy glass) Her cup now spills on her skirt And as she cuts her knees in the dirt'' they mean she is about to kill herself and she is sort of relieved, because she is going to be benign (innocent and sweet) again. the cup spilling on her skirt refers her death coming..and relates in a subtle way to Jesus at the last supper. ''writhe and burn father you were''..he was a father to her until he did this..now he should burn for it. yep. that's pretty much all i know..andrew schwab is my freaking hero dudes..amazing.

i agree with all of that, except that the lines "digs the shiv into a blessed place." and "now she has your eyes" are too coincidental. i tihnk it means abortion, but i also think that "now she has your eyes." also refers to the temptation as well, cause schwab is amazing like that.

I think that the song is about the bastard child of a man. When he sees her smile or her eyes she brings up the guilt he has for the sin he committed. She grows up with the knowledge that she is illegitimate. A lot of children coming out of these situations grow up depressed and perform acts of self-mutilation and even sometimes suicide. She is trapped into the same life her father lead by the poor example he has shown. The fact that she also has pre-marital sex with partners not her own depresses her even further.

It kind of sounds like it's sarcasm because when you this girl was a baby her dad was proud that she had his eyes. But really it's like are you proud now dad? She has your wayward, sexually immoral eyes. She's killing her own self with this and he feels guilty for setting this bad example. At the end it sounds like she's falling to her knees in prayer and wanting to start over like strat said

When I read these lyrics the first thing I thought of was that a couple were going through a divorce because of the fathers infidelity. The song to me is showing how much pain parents cause their children when divorce occurs. These lyrics lead me to believe this meaning-"your wayward eyes will be her demise" The fathers infidelity will be the daughters pain. "Took her for the ride you've ridden" " into anothers arms into another bed. when all the while your young one waits up in a dread." The daughter thinks it is her fault her dad cheated on his wife. "prays for the hourglass to flip in reverse" She wants it to go back to the happy, loving family before the divorce. She is too young to realize that her fathers wandering eyes will essentially play a great part in the forming of her character and person. she will grow up thinking that if she had done something differently her family would have still been together. very sad, because this happens all the time to kids. there minds work differently than adult thinking. They hold guilt that leads into adulthood. Only Jesus can take that guilt and resentment away if you let him.

or.... it could have been a father who raped his daughter. He stripped her of her innocence and now she is cutting herself "digs the shiv into her placid veins". He tries to act like nothing happened "thin veneer of catechism" but the guilt eats him. "Writhe and burn father you were" sounds like it's a pretty angry statement but fitting for this situation.

i think this is talking about being drawn in by temptation and the consequences of acting on that temptation. this song seems to be specifically adressing sexual immorality i think. and then talking about how she wishes she could rewind time, i guess to take back her actions.

"Your ever wayward eyes... Will be her demise" I think I agree with the meaning of this song. Usually something like our "wayward eyes" seem like just a personal issue, not involving anyone else. But, when we act on what we think it's going to have consequences that we can't take back ("She prays for the hourglass to flip and reverse"). It's a sad moment when someone goes from their naive, innocent view of themselves ("benign sense of self") to a revealing image ("Now she has your eyes") that they can go back from ("Celebrating her exit").
