It seems to me like he sees those who have come before him in the rock industry and failed, and is worried about the same thing happening to himself. ... the songs about trying so hard to do something and falling short.

I agree with cactus and just to add, it also seems with one line he's dismantling the belief that we must know every detail about our celebrities instead of knowing what they do and appreciating that.
