This song seems to me that it's all about how you're never truly anonymous anymore, the government is always watching, the media is everywhere, it's impossible to keep anything a secret. "Well, of course I'd like to sit around and chat; Well, of course I'd like to stay and chew the fat; But someone's listening in..." No matter what you do, people will find out about it. We're always looking for someone or something to blame for the problems of society. "We're hungry for a lynching..."

it sounds like a petty argument between close friends. and it doesnt happen "if someone's listenin' in," or in public.

I believe that "Glasshouse" is supposed to be one word, and i think it's a british word for greenhouse, so the term "Living in a Glasshouse" has a more idiotequeish message behind it.

I see a lot of different messages in this song....mainly; fame, and all that someone famous most go through and put up with "living in a glass house"..such as "think(ing) of all the starving millions" but at the same time, NOT being able to "talk politcs" or 'throw stones." Society puts celebrities on pedestels. (Your royal highnesses) Basically, a celebrity has influence over society, but they are forced to keep there mouths shut, because "we (society) are hungry for a lynchin'" Hence the lines "Well of course I'd like to stay and chew the fat. Well of course I'd like to sit around and chat, But someone's listening in." We love a celebrity until (s)he does or says something that society doesn't either want to except or doesn't approve of. Then, it's all over the celebrity. Society will only scrutinize and scrutinize, until the celebrity has nothing left. (That's a strange mistake to make) Therefore, the celebrity "should turn the other cheek, Livin' in a glass house." At least that is the way I see it. Quite a depressing song, really. The music, however, is maybe the most beautiful sound, Radiohead has ever created, maybe. Radiohead is one of my favs. Peace.

Yorke said in an interview that this is basically a response to the media blitz that bothers the hell out of people, especially those involved only by family connections. He spoke of a lady who's husband was being relentlessly chased my the media for weeks. She put all of the pictures from the papers about her and her husband all over the windows of her house, so that the photographers on her lawn only could take pictures of those they already took. Thom thought that was ingenous, and that is where the "Papering the window panes" comes from. Great song, even better message.

da jazzzz........such a sweet sweet song. chilled. its about radiohead talking about their old friend, society and politicians controlling...how they are covering up there fragile contradictions with false smiles, not talking politics, just gossiping and spinning everything, and how they make people like battery hens and make sure they dont talk about all the wrong in the world, nor throw stones in protest at what they are trying to do. How they make people just a non thinking lynch mob, following what they choose to publicise......and all because they are scarred of loosing their power with their paranoia……….living in their glass house, they wont talk about real things just incase someone spots their weaknesses. What I find strange is how they liken it to a woman…“she” and “highnesses”. Do women, put all false smiles, and try and cover up their faults, do they just gossip rather than talk about real life and just form lynch mobs………………………. Oh ,,,,,,,, yer, guess they do! :)……………….. oh shit, ok not all women , but think about when theirs a kinda lynchy mob thing going on on the news, whos all ways at the front … , !! who always watches soaps instead of real life things , who puts on false smiles, who buys fashion/society magazines, who always sits around each others houses with tea and biscuits bad mouthing the slightly odd thing that they’ve noticed////////////////sorry but its true. Women sure can suck. But their a lot cuter than politicians. Im so sorry to any women that aren’t like their mums. I apologise. Your not all bad, and I guess……. your not all cute. Equality can suck.

I think DammitSteve has got things the closest of anyone so far--Thom and co. are famous, so they're living in a glass house for everyone to scrutinize them and spread rumors (hence, "I'm in trouble with my only friend"), and they feel as if they can't reveal themselves because there's always someone listening in.

This song is just so amazing! I love this song. I think this song is about always being and tense and suspicious, when you feel you have no privacy and you suspect things of even the nicest people. When you think everyone has evil intentions. When you're always afraid to let down your guard because someone might want to take advantage of you. I just love that last line: "But someone's listenin' in". It gives me goosebumps every time! Great way to end a CD!

yeah. definitely "only only only" also there's an "If" before "someone's listening in." changes the meaning of the song.
