RADIOHEAD - Motion Picture Soundtrack (Kid A) (acoustic)
transcription by Joey Gallagher (joeygallagher@hotmail.com)
This new acoustic transcription is taken from a New York show Thom did in
97' I think. The old acoustic version which was taken off of a Vancouver
radio show was tuned up a 1/4 step. Thom plays this version with a capo on
the 2nd fret, which I think sounds much better.
Capo 2nd fret

| I think this song is about a person's life, but not in the physical sense, more in the sense of happiness and feeling and how they can escape you. I see it as Thom talking to his normal self from the perspective of a person who comes out in himself once in awhile, an all seeing person at complete peace and happiness. THe song is hte end of hte feeling, the end of that perspective/person's existence as he will slip back into normal mode. | |

| here's my meaning of the song: it sounds like to me this person had lost a love either through them being dumped or the love one passing away. From the way the lyrics go, it has this feel like this person is drowning themselves in alcohol and drugs. They try to fill the void by sleeping with other people and watching films that reminded them of the kind of fairytale love they believed existed. Now I'm not sure if "I think you're crazy, maybe" is directed at themself or the other person. If it's at themself it could be because the other person is gone and they want to let go and can't. If it's directed at the person that's gone, then my guess is this person thinks the other is crazy for throwing away what they had. The next verse could be about this girl or guy not being able to stop themselves from trying to contact the person that's gone, knowing it won't help them they still can't help themselves from doing it. Then it deals with them feeling betrayed because they felt the person they were with was supposed to be their soul mate. and as for the original verse that wasn't included in the Kid A version... it might be like this: it could be about the dumper or lost one being so different or far gone from their memory.. that they can't even recognize who they once were. all in all it sounds to me like someone coping with the emotions and feelings someone would experience when they are now faced with living their life without the person they truly loved. | |

| Some think Kid A is the story of a person's life and Motion Picture Soundtrack is about death. If so, it's a very interesting look at it. What Thom is saying is that in the end it's not all beautiful like everyone says, and death is not wonderful ('It's not like the movies, they fed us on little white lies'). This song seems more of a cold acceptance, that the world is an ugly place, but at the same time there is a touch of optimism at the fact that there is something after life, after the ugliness. That could be what the instrumental bit is at the end, the assumption into heaven. Of course, I'm not saying this is exactly what the song means, I'm just throwing it out there :D | |

| Not only is this song unutterably breathtaking, but the music video for it is indescribably beautiful. If someone's never seen it, look for it on websites or download it with a file-sharing program. You will not be disappointed. It IS the visual existence of the feeling of which the song, itself, is the sonic manifestation. | |

| this is a song about deep, intoxicating affection that is disrupted, though not entirely squelched, by reality. the reality of who that person truly is... the reality of limitations experienced in relations between human beings that are so often disregarded or minimized in formulaic cinema. real life, and those bound by it, are full of conflicted and tormented emotion/thought, like this song. this is mirrored in the video.. particularly the beginning when we are brought into a landscape of cold snowy mountains and burning flowing red eruptions, in the sky beyond, that envelop the serene yet frigid mountain scape. soaring through the cool air towards the fiery background, you are accompanied by fragmented bits of red. (as these conflicting feelings, hot and cold - elation and displeasure - affection and disappointment - passion and regret, are not separate but all intertwined - tugging in different directions... adding to his torment.) he is denouncing this false idyllic perception of love in his partner, but also (i think) quietly in himself, as there is a part of that lie, however small, that still breathes in him. the video starts with the words "i'd like to help you" written over a scene with slews of white telephone poles, one after another, with severed wires spread out over a vast landscape against churning blood red skies, like gravestones or crosses on a battlefield. communication disrupted. he cannot reach her... cannot truly connect - therefor, he is helpless to help her. i got this same feel from his voice: a longing to piece her back together (to save her but also perhaps to reconstruct his image of her and save himself from laying among the rubble of what he thought he had -or could have- with her) , accompanied by a sorrowful resignation to the knowledge that he is not able to do so.. as any belief that he would be capable of such a feat would just be another manifestation of the the delusions brought on by yet another lie that is perpetually force-fed, to the masses, by the movies. he quietly acknowledges the limitations of humanity and what this means for them as lovers and as individuals. alcohol, pills, film, sex,... all the substances that so effectively corrode reality for us, allowing us to seduce ourselves with our own delusions. he can be with her only when he uses these instruments to distort or wash away what he knows to be real. the image of what he thought his lover to be has been shattered. he wants to be with her but knows it is not possible in this life... not with the way she is now... not in his current state... not with all that has happened. if they were only a little more evolved... if things had only been a bit different... perhaps, in another life. | |

| i think this song is about a breakdown one may experience after the end of a very deep relationship. the narrator expects everything to end all happily, she'll realize her mistake and it'll end like some meg ryan movie; they'll walk into the sunset and all that crap. he needs to be with her again even if it isn't real, even if it is only in his dreams. he also still believes that they were meant to be therefore they will have another shot at it in the next life. unfortunately, it seems she is not quite the little angel he thought she was and is perhaps not the perfect gal for him afterall--he is unwilling to fully realize this though. yeah but thats just my take... | |

| It's a shame that people invest a good amount of time to write such kind of bullshit. In brief words: All you wrote is nonsense. | |

| ikkle pikkle, the reason they cut the last verse is cause Thom wanted to keep it short and sweet, like a crooner ballad from the 20's or 30's or something, he told me so in VH1 | |

| I have this friend- she's going to die so young before she hits 18, I can feel it- too many drugs, too much depression, and this makes me think of her, because I know I'll just wake up one morning and she'll be gone and all I'll have is this song to remember her by. It made me sad she tried to die and all I could think was I would hear this song when I went to sleep, and I hope maybe she wasn't crazy, maybe. | |

| Love this song. Always some kind of disillusionment we fall into. I think the "I think you're crazy, maybe" part is Thom talking to himself, but I'm not sure. He's saying that to himself, but then he just gives up being sane altogether and says "I will see you in the next life." | |

| There are a lot of meanings for me in this song: My best friend died a couple of months ago. Obviously, this song gets to me in a literal sense ("l will see you in the next life") Then, just in general, the first verse ("Cheap sex and sad films/Help me get back where I belong") The way people always turn to *things* in a futile attempt to get something back or to feel something. God, this song is so beautiful. | |

| reading through other interpretations, i guess the death/suicide thing is plausible.. but, personally, i really did not take that line (see you in the next life) to be so literal. i feel like it is more o an admittance that he still has deep feelings for his partner but that it is not possible to be with her (in a healthy way) in this life. it seems it's all about denouncing the spell cast on his partner (and humanity) by tales of the silver screen. untruths about this mythical sort of uber-love. an indestructible love that endures all and always comes out the other side, of life's treacheries, stronger. a love that "conquers all", as claimed by the continuously regurgitated cliche. he is dispeling this fabricated world portrayed on screen wherein opening up a vein and bleeding all over paper can undo all that has been said... erase all the mistakes and betrayals... redraw boundaries that have been crossed. where a simple love letter is the cure to all one's relationship problems and can turn everything around. | |
