It reminds me of over-protective mums. It's not unusual for mother to be terrified that their little baby (20 year old baby, 30 year old baby) is going to die while out. I can imagine the mum sitting at home, imagining all the cars trying their best to kill her baby as he drives to and from work.

I think this song is literally just about a fear of cars -- Thom Yorke has said in interviews that he hates them and is never quite sure he is controlling the car completely when he is driving, or something to that effect.

The accoustic version is awe-inspiring; the passion in Thom's voice as he talks about "all the things I forgot to say" truly haunting. I think the theme of 'Killer Cars' is the typical Yorke method of using a specific to talk about a general- i.e. talking off death by a car crash is a metaphor for sudden death as a whole. Download the accoustic version and compare it to the original mix; the accoustic seems more passionate to me.

Is it possible to state your message without being confrontational? Yes. Thom is a little wary of cars, as we all should be. He's said something along the lines of "We're just riding on those things, you know. We're not in control of them." For myself it brings to mind a fear of the way we live our lives, trusting in things that just carry us along without thinking about how we got from point A to point B. We do a lot of things without thinking. We go to the ATM and expect this box to spit money into our hands because that's just what it does. Hop on the train, and it goes. Press this button, the box turns on and shows us images. That sort of thing. No one stops to think that what you're looking at is tons and tons of tiny points of red, green, and blue light. You're sitting there staring at a box, but if you catch yourself you'll notice that when you're absorbed in what you're watching it's almost like you ignore your peripheral vision. All you see is what's in front of you. Sorry. That got long-winded. Oh well.

I love the faster version of this song, it certainly shows where Coldplay and Travis may have got some inspiration from : )

When you break it down modern life is incredible complex and there are a million and one things that could bring on our demise. Life is quite fragile. Wrapped up in the back of the trunk is safer but a miserable way to live. Fear of sudden death or the sudden death of a loved one can consume if you don't feel resolved. The only kick in life is pumping this steel Knowing death can occur, that we are fragile makes one more appreciative of life.
