GUITAR SOLO
Tom Morellos own exact words
"For the guitar solo section, I got right up close to the amp to get some feedback
and, working the whammy bar with my left hand, I flicked the toggle switch from the
"off" to the "on" position in the rhythm you hear.In order t achieve this toggle
switch effect, you'll need a guitar with two pickups, each with its own volume
control. On my guitar, I turn the volume control for the neck pickup all the
way down to zero (or "off"), and I turn the volume control for the bridge pickup
up full. This way, when I flick the toggle switch from the neck to the bridge
pickup, I am essentially turning the guitar sound from the "off" to the "on"
position, then manipulating the pitch with the tremolo bar to make it sound like
a whistle, or an angry flute. With that particular guitar, I always get the
same feedback note when I get right up next to the amp, so it's very reliable"
that was tom morello explaining the solo.
Now instead of having morellos wiring like in his guitar for his killswitch
you can just get a regular killswitch insatlled into your guitar.(does basiclly
the same thing).Toms is wired kind of like a les paul.2 volumes for each pick
up turn one to 0 the other to 10 and its a killswitch, his i think is only a 2 way
switch unlike les pauls that are 3 ways usally.

now just play this untill the end and thats it.
then the radio thing toms morellos word again
It sounds like there's a transistor radio mixed in at the end of the song, and
that's exactly what it is. When I was doing overdubs, I was playing my
solid-body Ovation Breadwinner guitar through a MusicMan amp, while using an old,
vintage distortion pedal called a Tone Bender. The Tone Bender has a warm,
broken-up distortion sound that goes perfectly with the track. I first got turned
on to Tone Benders when we were working on Evil Empire with producer Brendan O'Brien,
who also produced our new album. I found that when I turned on the pedal but
didn't play anything, I picked up a crystal-clear signal from a Korean radio station.
In earlier mixes of "Sleep Now in the Fire," that radio thing was featured more
prominently. We had the radio signal running through the entire song. It was a
little annoying, so we decided just to stick it at the very end. I always like to
say that there are no samples on any of our records, and this is a good example.
That radio signal is no sample - it was played!

| This song of emnity from an extreme liberal reflects his view of American government as intensly conservative. His loss of faith in the system is discernably deeply rooted as he expresses his scrupulous ideals about the misuse of power. He starts off by pointing out that when America gained all of its power, it was trusted to guide the world on a righteous path.(lines1-4) However, corruption led to the power laying in the hands of the greedy, and that while America still shows its supposed high ideals by letting people speak freely and stand for themselves, the promised carte blanche is empty and worthless.(lines 5-7) He goes on to state that Big Brother will protect its 'Pigs' by eliminating those that pose a threat to abidement of the status quo. His final two lines of the first verse say that his ideals are inside the new generation, and that eventually the young will fix things. The next two verses point out events in which America took advantage of others. He names Colombus' ships, which brought the Anglo-Saxon people to the new world, and eradicated the Native Americans for European greed. He names the noose, which was used on black slaves in a world where 'all men are created equal' and used by self proclaimed vigilantes who would kill those who disagreed with them. He names the Rapist, someone who totally takes advantage of another. The fields overseer was the cruel monster who would watch the slaves work, and beat them. The agents of orange are a chemical agent used in Bio-warfare during Vienam. The priests of Hiroshima are in reference to all the civillians killed in the A-Bomb drops of 1945. The cost of my desire, is the greed of American Corporations. At the beginnging of the second and third verse he says two different lines. In the second he says that 'the lie is the governments expense for it to attain its craving. The party are the leaders who profit off American greed. The beginning of the last verse states that the hunger for money will lead to the end of the world, and that we are at the brink of disaster. He says the government wants you to believe this is the only way, so take it 'though it made you ill'. | |
