I think Tbabystillz has nailed it. Its about how we are tricked into striving for the "American Dream," but this dream means nothing, just to "Sleep and wake and serve."

i like RATM, their a favorite of mine, and i like their politics, im very political, but when it comes down to it, if you really dont like america, if you hate every last thing about it, then get out, no one is keeping you here. but with that aside, i think its about the fake-ness of american economics

This song is actually about how we are expected to grow up and become businessmen and workers for the system, and that any "illusions", "ideals", should be left behind in order to "serve" for the country. It is about the troubles of trying to do something you life, when all of society wants you to do something else.

oh, come on minorxxthreat, that's a bunch of bull, first of all, if you buy into the "if you don't like america, just leave" you are missing the entire point of RATM's politics. Most people agree that the U.S. makes things very good for the people living in the U.S. When they set up dictatorships in Central America that cause the deaths of thousands of people in order that people can buy bannanas for a few cents cheeper it didn't hurt anybody in the U.S. too much. It hurt people not in the U.S. The whole thing about "If you don't like it leave" doesn't make any sense because most of what the U.S. does wrong that people don't like about it is what they do to everybody else and leaving just makes you one of the everybody else that the U.S. likes to crap all over.
