Beautiful song, available on Bonnaroo Live CD
Capo Fret 2
Listen for strumming, it's great in this song
Intro
Am F C F C
F
She lifts her skirt up to her knees
C
Walks through the garden rows with her bare feet, laughing
F
I never learned to count my blessings
C
I choose instead to dwell in my disasters
Am
Walk on down the hill
E
Through the grass grown tall and brown
F C
And still it's hard somehow to let go of my pain
Am
On past the busted back
E
Of this old and rusted Cadillac
F C
That sinks into this field collecting rain
C Am E
Will I always feel this way
C Am E
So empty, so estranged
Am
F
Of these cutthroat busted sunsets,
C
These cold and damp white mornings I have grown weary
F
If through my cracked and dusty dimestore lips
C
I spoke these words out loud would no one hear me
Am
Lay your blouse across the chair
E
Let fall the flowers from your hair
F C
And kiss me with that country mouth so plain
Am
Outside the rain is tapping on the leaves
E
To me it sounds like they're
F C
applauding us, the quiet love we make
C Am E
Will I always feel this way
C Am E
So empty, so estranged
Harmonica
Am F C F C
F
Well I looked my demons in the eyes
C
Laid bare my chest said do your best and destroy me
F
See I've been to hell and back so many times
C
I must admit you kind of bore me
Am
There's a lot of things that can kill a man
E
There's a lot of ways to die
F C
Yes and some already dead who walk beside you
Am
There's a lot of things I don't understand
E
Why so many people lie
F C
Well it's the hurt you hide that fuels the fires inside you
C Am E
Will I always feel this way
C Am E
So empty, so estranged
Harmonica
Am F C F C Am

| Somehow, LaMontagne creates an image of a woman of great beauty. Is it inner beauty or a physical beauty? I can't help but feel it is both. His direct statements to the contrary ("country mouth plain" and "you kinda bore me") do little to change the image he's created. Everytime I hear this song I really want to see this woman. There is obviously something lacking in the relationship and by creating such a perfect image of the woman I think LaMontagne is placing responsibility for the shortcomings on himself. | |

| I took a quite different meaning from this song. I see it as his distance from the female spoke of in the song. The physical aspects is all he mentions and that is seems like all it ties them together. Which leads to the feelings of emptiness. He ends most of the lines with "will I always feel so empty." Then at the end with the Demons, it's as if he's coming clean with the situation, but through going through it he's become so numb. I don't know. Seems to make sense to me. The end of the song is hazy still to me. | |

| Ray sings with more emotion in his voice than anyone I've ever heard, literally. It dawned on me how much I love his music when one day I realized that every time, every single time, I think about putting an album on, whether it be home or in the car or even at work, Ray's music is the first thing I want to listen to. And this is 3 years after first hearing Trouble. A lyrical and emotional genius. | |

| im in the process of gettingto know the album, but igot stuck now for a week by the song 'Empty'.what a magic song that is! heynow is rightby saying the emphasis of the song isn't on depression. it's just a pain/ emptiness a lot of man (and woman?)feel while they experiencing beauty and hapiness as well. i think that is one of life's charmes. | |

| I agree with heynow that the meaning is more complex and becomes more clear withing the album. Sensitive, soulful people also do suffer from depression more than the main of society. I can't decide if the depression begets the empathy or if the empathy begets the depression. I know that because I am aware of feeling and seem to feel more I can easily become depressed if I allow myself to dwell on the sad things I see around me every day. | |

| I have to agree with SaSaSushi. If this song is not about depression, I don't know what is! "Well I looked my demons in the eye Laid bare my chest said do your best destroy me See I've been to hell and back so many times I must admit you kinda bore me" -- Brilliant! | |

| This song is beyond beautiful. As for the meaning perhaps I'm only reading personal experience into it but I definitely think he's singing about battling with depression in the last two verses. It's good to know geniuses on the level of John Lennon, Nick Drake and Elliott Smith still walk the earth. | |

| i recently stumbled across ray lamontagne after hearing "hold you in my arms" on the last kiss soundtrack, and i must say i;m mesmerized by him and his voice. shelter was my favorite song, but now this one is inching up. anyway, i read this article today http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/07/AR2006120700576_pf.html i guess his marriage dissolved between the first and last album, which must be an attributing factor to many of the relationship ending type songs in this album. | |

| Empty is a setup for the rest of the album. Lamontagne poetically describes his deep love for his lover. He sees in his lover how good his life is because of her/him. In spite of that realization, he is in pain because of an unexplained indiscretion. What that indiscretion is we do not know yet, but the rest of the album reveals his weakness. Empty does not directly address his depression, but the pain he feels for wrongs committed. The final two lines explain why he must bare his soul for all to see. | |

| Corrections: "Yes and some already dead that walk beside me" The last line should read, "Well it's the hurt I hide that fuels the fires inside me" Nonetheless, this song is incredible. | |
