The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Parallel Universe
From the album Californication

Tabbed by DRybes :x

Why is every tab on the internet for this song wrong? It`s not that hard to distinguish
between what the bass is playing and what the guitar is playing. If you play the bass
part of this song by itself, it sounds fine. If you play the guitar part by itself, it
does not sound right. The bass is the actual melody while the guitar only adds harmony.
Still, it seems like everyone tabs the guitar part the same way as the bass part, and it`s
not.

Also, it seems no one has attempted the phaser solo, so y`all want a solo... here you go.

Tuning: E A D G B e ... Standard. Guitar with Distortion.

Intro
-----

Hold a 12th fret harmonic on D and palm mute so it barely sounds at all.
Start off a little below tempo and gradually work your way up to speed.

Chorus 1

Let first chord ring and then hit the rest fast like the verse notes.
Attack strings hard and without palm mute.

Cm G5 Ab Eb G

B|-(4)---------------------|------------(8)----------|------* Bang away at ---|

Play this twice.

Verse 2
-------

The same as Verse 1. Palm mute just a little more than on the first verse.

Chorus 2
--------

The same as Chorus 1, but instead of playing it twice you play it 4 times.

Interlude
---------

Do NOT let the opening chord ring very long at all.
Only pick each note in this part once.

Verse 3
-------

Careful, this verse is different than the others.
Palm mute until the last measure.
Every note here is played TWICE.

e|-------------------------|-------------------------|
B|-------------------------|-------------------------|
G|-------------------------|-------------------------|
D|-13-13-13-13-13-13-13-13-|-13-13-13-13-13-13-13-13-|

At this point the palm muting gets really heavy. Note the different notes here.

E|-------------------------|-------------------------|

Chorus 3 + Solo Leadin
----------------------

The same as Chorus 1, but instead of playing it twice you play it 4 times.

The last time around instead of playing G5 for two measures, play this intro to the solo:

e|---------------------------------------------------|
B|-* Palm muted and lifted up to normal last note----|
G|---------------------------------------------------|
D|-10-10-10-10-10-10----10---10-*hold----------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------------|

Solo + Outro
------------

The bass keeps banging away like in the verses but the guitar starts a phaser solo.
Turn the feedback/intensity on the phaser up to keep the phasing noise in the background.
To get the sustained effect on certain notes you need to stand close to an amp and use
feedback. I use a PODxt and so I`ve discovered a compressor is the next best thing.

Hold all notes as long as possible. Especially remember to hold notes on multiple strings
to achieve the harmonizing sound. Example: in the second measure below, continue to hold
the 12 as you play the 10.

e|--------------------|--------------------|-------------------|-------------------|
B|--------------------|--------------------|-------------------|-------------------|
G|--------------------|--------------------|--------10---------|-------------------|

If I got the solo wrong, sue me, no one else ever attempted it.

The rest of the song sounds exactly correct, though. Enjoy and please rate.

Whoa! Hey, what a downer. Everybody thinks this is about heroine? Talk about single track. Here's what's this is about. After you read this and before you block me out, read through the lyrics or listen to the song again. This song is about reveling about being a Californian, (It is a common attitude among Californians) and falling in love with a girl from Hawaii. I am quite serious, almost all the lyrics simply fall in place once you know it.

I think this song is about heroine addiction. His parallel universe is the world of heroine.

i never really thought of this song as being about their heroine adiction. i though it was more about how fucked up the world is and how almost feels like your in a parallel universe, instead of reality, sometimes

this song is definitely about heroin addiction, and the line 'you can die but you're never dead, spiderweb' to me seems like it's referring to the addiction- how you may be apparently clean, but it's still always there, always with you even when you're not using. The 'spiderweb' line is part of it, when you're addicted you're trapped, caught, like a fly in a spiderweb.

just a note on a previous comment - hillel slovak, the original lead in the group, died from a heroine overdose in '88. its a stretch, but the song may be some sort of tribute to him.

Like it Alice, interesting take on it. I love the fact that just because you can't decypher a song after listening to it sober or straight, instantly it means that it's the artists' articulation of their various drug dependancies (then again, it might well be the case). If you ask me, Anthony came up with the lyrics after watching too much Star Trek. :P

the song is about heroin addiction and it becomes even more obvious when you consider when it was released. the californication album represents guitarist john frusciante's return to the band after quitting in '92 to do heroin. the band has a long history of trouble with smack, even losing their first guitarist hillel to it. anthony-- if you read his autobiography that was just released-- has even had several near death experiences with it. In 1999 though, john returned to the band clean from all drugs, anthony had been cleaning up and the band seemed to be having a rebirth from the blood sugar era. the whole album has that reflective feel where they look back on their errors and show their newfound wisdom. hope this clears a few things up.
