I think this song is one of their greatest, lyrically. not too sure on what it's about though. Any suggestions at all?

i live in australia, and on the radio one day i heard flea doing a voice over with this song in the background. it was just a short 20-30 second add about speeding or drink driving or something. it was around the christmas time. so when i hear this song and the bit" stay the night we'll save the population" i think he means don't drive home after drinking at a mates place ,don't drink and drive at all. stay the night SAVE THE POPULATION. i'm not saying that is what the whole song is about ,but i did hear flea say that with this song in the background. anyway chili fans, just thought i might share that with you.

Maybe it's about doing good things, and think about life the whole night. More like: We can think whole night with our band, how we can save the population. That's what the song said to me. But I could be wrong....

listened to this song over and over, and if its about what i think its about, i have seen everything anthony's describing in friends w/serious drug problems like rhcps have seen... its about getting drunk/getting high, living the party life because the night is young & you can. the second verse is about how when people do this they always know what can result: arrest, car accidents, killing themselves, killing someone else but they "pick their broken down devotion." essentially saying the risk is worth it, & you consciously choose to get caught if you get wasted illegally or drive drunk & get caught. "eyes wide with revalation shine at the police station," is about when it does happen, you've fucked yourself over, and now your realizing maybe it wasn't worth it (hence revalation) and the shining could be referring to teariness or simply glazed over stoned/drunk eyes. and then, when the verdict comes around, despite the fact that you now realize what you've done, you're going to go down (get charged for your crime) you stay all night in jail to "save the population" its about drinking or smoking & getting in an accident or just caught, in which case your substance is the pistol. its about trying to decide where the to draw the line because it gets too dangerous, but after all is done, most people who didn't care to begin with, dont care after. if drugs & alcohol meant more before, they probably still do, and you'll do it again & the cycle continues, as it does at the end of the song love this song, however you take it, anyone can relate

Look at the verses... Anthony's singing about drinking, prostitution, people awaiting trial... The whole night thing is a metaphor. Yea, the sex thing fits nicely, and damn if that isn't a nice way of putting it, but I think he's saying something more along the lines of "its always darkest just before dawn." Society and whatnot is pretty fucked up, but we shouldn't give up on it, because if we just hang around a little bit longer, we can fix things.

i think this one is actually more literal, about a night of sex, drugs, and gambling, but i could be wrong.

probably meaning like... everything you do is adding to the list of things youve done and gotten away with. Ever night you go drinking, and get away with it, is one more to the list. It's also all about the memories, and the good times that keep you going, and trying new things. Ever notice the best nights of your life, were some of the craziest? Also, i think it could have some reference to the band themselves, and all they've been through. cuz they have a long involved history behind them, or something.
