Tabbed by Charles Benagh (CCBenagh@hotmail.com)

Artist: Red Hot Chili Peppers
Title: Venice Queen
Album: By the Way

Equipment: John Frusciante plays a Fender Strat into a clean Marshall amp.
For the break, he uses a steel-string dreadnaught acoustic.

Legend: p - pull off
h - hammer on
~ - vibrato

To get those high pitched notes at the beginning, turn the volume knob down
and play, then increase the volume so it fades in. Add some delay and
reverb to add to the spaciness.

Death - reincarnation in a buddhist kind of way (come again just to start afresh) ... In a buddhist belief, when you die, and you haven't been enlightened, something similar to your soul is released (body free and a body less) and before being reborn (in the moment of the meantime), you're kind floating around the ether (easy now to find a breeze), for want of a better word. You're drawn back to earth because of earthly desires and essentially pick your parents (find a place where you can see all the mamas and the papas) ... So the first part is kind of a first-person/soul perspective on the time between dying and being reborn. The second part is a good-bye to a friend. Thas my take ...

Its about his girlfriend that he just split up with, can't remember her name, but shes a model anyway. Gloria is just a name used in the song. She was from Italy, hence the title venice queen. The beginning has got great atmosphere to it, beautiful song, my fave on the album along with dosed.

I agree with boozm's interpretation, which I think I read somewhere once before. It also explains the meaning of the pictures in the album booklet and the one on the back of the CD case.

Its about a friend of theirs who recently died. They mentioned it in an interview. Anthony said it describes how they feel about not being able to properly say goodbye We all want to tell her Tell her that we love her

i think this song is about california. venice beach. "Paddle on just around the bend" "I see you standing by the sea The waves you made will always be A kiss goodbye before you leave" are all about a beach. could also be about someone called gloria. but i just think they use that name for the sake of it.
