It's an awesome song... Honestly, I think it's about Anthony's drug abuse (I know it's cliche, but hear me out). "The medicated state of mind you found is overrated" refers to the altered state of mind of being high. "You saw it all come down and now it's time to imitate it" can refer to Anthony witnessing people dying because of the same thing he's doing (like Hillel, and John almost), and still doing it. Words like "altitude" and the phrase "in love and elevated" speak once again about being high, however, his fortune would have faded at some point.

Fortune faded, in conjuction with it's video seems to describe a buzz or high from crime. Someone who enjoys the thrill of doing something they ain't supposed to be but making sure they get a way with it. "fortune faded" refers to the fact that eventually luck will run out and once caught, the thrill will end (like at the end of the video). The jibe at God seems to refer to 'the man' or the law, someone in charge and the defiance of this authority is exciting.

I think that this song COULD be about George Bush and his "stealing" of the White House. Particularly in the lyric "You took a town by storm, The mess you made was nominated...Oh I, do you?...Now put away your welcome, soon you'll find you've overstayed it" Anyone else think so?

Yes a definate hit, its on the radio all the time in Australia, I mean this and Can't Stop, By the Way and Zephyr Song being their most recent hits I can say you hear these songs all the time. But Fortune Faded has a new level of exitement, its means so much to listen to it. Every time I hear it it makes me intense and my blood pumps a lot. You have to love the band for making you do that.

Interesting. I think this song is amazing, yet I dont know why. I personally find the lyrics too obscure, and though you all make a good argument, I agree with flea who wrote "This song hasnīt any meaning. In the Making of FF-Video (MTV) Anthony said something like "Donīt ask me what this song is about, because I donīt know"." Prehaps it doesnt refer to one single theme, prehaps it doesnt refer to anything, prehaps it is puerly intended to be enjoyed and endulged by the psychadylic souls of this universe..........

I think it could be about the way his drug use was affecting his family life and his relationships, especially with Ione. He thought that drug use was great at the time, but now that he is clean, he looks back at the past and sees the fortune that he has now fading to when he had none at all.

The lyrics are very much like those of "Lifestyles of the broke and obscure" by Wolfsbane... I believe it's about a man who commits a crime under the influence of a drug, and as he loses the high, the realisation kicks in. "Altitude" suggests he;s high, so losing it means he's in the middle of a come-down.

I don't think it is about only drug addiction. You can define it as you like: it's about defeat.. with love/drugs/business/music/yourself.. Pick sth for you or maybe create more options as you feel it.

It's probably just more randomness, but the way Anthony plays with words it doesn't sound random it sounds perfectly balanced. It's great. The video is awesome too, I wish I had one of those light drawing sticks...
