i think this song is about their past and how they dont want anyone to make them forget it because its still a big part of who they are and how they got here... maybe.

it's arthur J, he was a religious leader and pushed the views onto society.. the song is talking about religion stripping individuality.

ok i think that he's talking about how his heart was broken and his life is never the same because of that. He's gonna try to pretend he's in love again but he doesn't want to forget what love was like, and he doesn't want to forget his past. he went from place to place, but no matter where he went, even though he lived the rock star life with lots of money and girls, he never got that one person back who he really loved. that one person, is more sacred than the rockstar life. Who is Arthur J?

first of all let me just say i love the peppers...i mean there music is just on this level that is undescribable...but enough about that this isn't a fan club sight. i agree with danieljarvis to some extent. this whole song is about conformity and how society sets idealistic standards that they expect everyone to follow. i totally see the religous reference, but what i really see is AK's commentary on the whole concept of mainstream music. i think he feels that his band started out as a little hobby he and some friends had, but with their fame the band was forced to alter their incredibly unique style. For example, look at their album "by the way" which is probably the least funky.Don't get be wrong its a good album, but i find it blatantly obvious that it was heavily influenced by other people than the chili peppers. In other words,i think the song is about AK's fraustration with the hypocrisy of the music buisness. (Sorry if i upset anyone and you disagree with me).

I think this is about him living through all of these things and not wanted them to be stripped from him even though they may have been painful...oh and about the album not being funky or whatever...sure its no freaky styley but it is still amazing and i think that is what's unique about them. kat that is how they do it and i like it if i had a band thats what i would do!!
