Red House Painters - Have You Forgotten
from the album Songs For A Blue Guitar
released 1996 Island Records
written by Mark Kozelek
transcribed by Brian Fenton (fentonb@mathds1.ul.ie)

C F G Am G F
I can't let you be, cause your beauty won't allow me
C F
wrapped in white sheets,
G Am G F
like an angel from a bedtime story
G Am
and shut out what they say,
F Am G F
cause your friends are fucked up anyway
G Am
and when they come around,
F Am G F
somehow they feel up and you feel down.

(same chords as above for the next verse:)
When we were kids, we hated things our parents did
we listened low to Casey Kasem's radio show
that's when friends were nice,
to think of them just makes you feel nice
the smell of grass in spring
and October leaves cover everything.

C G Am G F
Have you forgotten how to love yourself? x2

I can't believe all the good things that you do for me
sat back in a chair like a princess from a faraway place
nobody's nice, when you're older your heart turns to ice
and shut out what they say;
they're too dumb to mean it anyway

When we were kids, we hated things our sisters did
backyard summer pools and christmases were beautiful
and the sentiment of coloured mirrored ornaments
and the open drapes
look out on frozen farmhouse landscapes

Have you forgotten how to love yourself? x6

=====================

This is played with a capo on the 3rd fret.
The F chord at all times is played with an open E string
(the light E string, not the heavy one).
In the chorus, he plays the barred C and G shapes i.e.
the C is played at the 11th fret etc.

In the verse, for the C chord pull off the E note to a D,
and for the first F chord pull off the A note to a G.

The F that ends each line has a little bit that goes
E-F-D-E on the D string. It's easy.

The one part I wasn't 100% sure about is the first F in the
3rd and 4th lines of each verse. An F seems to work
fine, but on the record, you can hear a B note from
the bass. I guess it's just another of those brilliant
Red House Painter things! Genius! I'm sticking to my
F though.

Mark Kozelek is a very talented man. Anyway, for those who don't really know him, you can quote him from live shows: "when we were kids we (done?) the drugs our parents did" Album release for RHP was Acoustic Solo, Vanilla Sky was a band version which as been perrformed live.

This song is great to listen to when you're actually in love with somebody. Or want to be. *sob*

i particularly question the line "hated things our parents did" i think it can be interpreted as they hated the same things as their parents. like influecned. rather than the parents actions. like listening casey kasem for instance.

this song is so beautiful. kind of reminds me of switchfoot - let that be enough. 'shut out what they say, cause your friends are fucked up anyway' so true.

The difference of the "Vanilla Sky OST-Version" lies in the omission of the part "sat back in a chair / like a princess from a faraway place / nobody's nice / when you're older your heart turns to ice / and shut out what they say / they're too dumb to mean it anyway / when we were kids / we hated things our sisters did". Nice song!

obviously, the song appears to be directed to a lover, but i just realized it could be directed towards a child as well. the way he's telling her not to listen to her friends and whatnot just sounds like he's talking to a child, then in the second verse of each stanza, he's reminiscing about being a child to her. perhaps the chorus is talking to himself i dunno, just an alternate way to look at it, i personally think he's talking to a lover

this song is so ture...and i agree with all of you, it is so beautiful.... i think he really loves this girl, and he really looks up to her and she just makes him so happy, but the situation she is in, makes her upset, therefore making him angry that she is upset. this song really means a lot to me because i know the people i consider my best friends, dont like me very much.. but my boyfriend really shows that he cares for me, and is always open to my complaints about them. i dont know what i did wrong to have them hate me so much, but this song really eases my pain. also i think he is so right when he says, " nobody's nice when you're older your heart turns to ice and shut out what they say they're too dumb to mean it anyway " the more heartbreak and hurt you endure as a child the harder you get, and when your older, you become bitter because of your past. life really stinks sometimes.

I think this song is about how someone you love can make you see things through a child's eye. When your a kid your innocent and you haven't had bad experiences with people. To kids the world is a perfect place. The childhood refrences to bedtime stories, the smell of spring, and backyard pools is contrasted to the more adult refrences of fucked up friends and people that are more ice than nice. The girl he's singing to has had so much affect on him that hes able to see the world through innocent eyes again - like hes never been hurt. He wants her to feel this way too. She's dealing with her fucked up friends, but hes trying to tell her that she needs to take a step back at it and look at things with a different perspective and remember to love herself. Great song.

this song brings tears to my eyes. it reminds me of those lyrics "when you gonna learn to love yourself as much as i do?" it's amazing. the people we love the most so much of the time seem not to believe that they are capable of receiving all of that love. they just can't seem to believe it's true. love is an amazing thing - we all could do with having this song sung to us.

I don't really know what to say about this song other than it's amazing. There are two versions to it, and I only like the one that's not very popular...it has different lyrics than what are posted here. Has more of a depressing drone to the music. Amazing song. Not really sure what it's about. Cori_Pea I think you may be right. Either way, it's definitely reflecting on a lot of memories...and that's what makes it so depressing. Love it.

I used to have this super masochistic taste in friends and girlfriends. I recently met a girl who made my heart grow so much. She made me remember how I'm not really a bad person after all and we fell in love at the same time. every line in this song happened at some point in each of our lives. I just have to say... I love you Rachel, thank you for making me remember how to love myself.
