The beginnning of the song is purely me.. I am terrified of love and heartbreak, but in this song its talking about how she actually has fallen in love despite her fears. I don't think its about her heart breaking but it breaks her heart to think about what she'd be like if she hadn't of fallen in love, in the music video her boxed-in black and white world is changed when a man comes into her life and everything is colorful and fun, and she is happy.

Without overanalyzing... I think it's more about being a dreamer all her life. And how she's afraid, anxious, confused, excited, happy all at the same time. She's afraid of being vulnerable. She knows when she's closed off, all she'll ever feel is pain. But at least she can be in control of that. In the end, she's glad she's able to feel something-even if it may be pain. I think the happy times cause her pain, too. Because needing someone is a scary thing. She's glad to be able to feel anything.

i think that this song is about balancing the love of a person and the love of music. it seems to me that the first verse is about protecting yourself from love by throwing yourself into a passion, a talent, in this case song.... missing out on love because of your onnection to your music is what "breaks my heart" the second verse seems to say that she is happy that she wasnt so absorbed in her music to miss out on love... it also points out the irony of singing love songs rather than falling in love.

I think this song is meant that she always wanted true love. She hears the music (love songs) and the voices in her mind (lyrics to the love songs). True love is what she wants the most. "I never loved nobody fully" "always one foot on the ground". Keeping one foot on the ground she never could allow herself to fall completely in love and let go for fear of being hurt. It breaks her heart to listen to the love songs, but yet needs to to move.

I love the beat to this song. It's so simple but just makes you want to move. I think the song is about her trying to protect herself from heartbreak by absorbing herself in music, but she falls in love and has her heart broken anyway.

I know everyone has their own opinion on the song well.. To me the song relates to what is going on with me right now... Pretty Much. There's this girl who has been hurt before but has never fully given her heart away.. till she met this guy.. who to her is amazing.. They hook up.. and all that good stuff.. well turns out he goes with this other girl.. but he still cares for the first girl and she still cares for him.. and she waits for him because he is pretty much all she wants.. but at the same time is protecting herself.. but it still hurts her that he's with someone else... that's what it says to me. -shrugs- Bye

i think this song is absolutely beautiful. the upbeat rhythm is deceptive, as to to me it says that she didn't want to fall in love, but did, and got hurt. she let her guard down and then got punished for that, after which she considers what she did wrong.

if you've seen the music video, it helps to understand the song, because the whole video is all in black in and white and shes interacting with this like, manequinn until the end when she finally lets herself fall in love with this real guy and then they play in this colorful powder...and at the end of the video they hold hands. it's suuuch a good video. go watch it on youtube! i think it breaks her heart that she never let herself fall in love until now, and she didnt' realize how good it is to let herself be in love.

well i think the song could be taken many diff ways. my take is she is talking about how she was in love and her heart was broken despite her atempts to protect it and maybe because she didn't go for it. and she has all these memories that haunt her. and she's sayin what if it never happened and she wouldn't be haunted, would that be better? and all her friends are trying to comfort her, but the pain is acute at times. when she hears all the voices, words and music. hard to explain. you'd have to be there i guess ;)

I love this songs first verse! It really illustrates me in my current relationship. I know I love him but it's more of a confused relationship in my head. I don't want to love him because I'm scared of what would happen if he broke my heart. So sometimes I don't tell him how much I love him! It's like I have a wall up and I could never love him fully. But as time go's by my wall is falling down... I just hope it doesn't end like this song does! Heart broken.

The song lyrics are a double entendre (one word or phrase, two which can be taken different ways) which I find someone with Regina's calibre to love to use often. Sting is another, for instance (see Ring Around Your Finger and I'm so Happy). Though a lost love means you are "heartbroken" , in this case she is expressing how it "breaks her heart" that she's never allowed herself to fall in love or rather how it's taken so long that she's now found a man she loves dearly. "All these sounds... voices" she's been lost in. Voices of doubt and fear, which have protected her so far. The second verse expressed all the things she would have regretted had she never met this man and simply "kept on singing love song to break my fall" As mentioned before, watch the video and in the end she gives her heart , symbolized by handing a heart shaped necklace, which "breaks" open to reveal the love and splendid "colours" of love (against her previous B&W world) which are discoverd from meeting her "true love" which then appears as her man (from the abtract headless body of a man she viewed before). Her heart is not broken from a failed romance, but her protected heart is "broken" to open her love completely to this man. Of course "all my friends say its gonna get better" is another double entendre. Where most are familar with one saying "its going to get better" after a failed romance, in this case it really means that the things she feels now in the beginning of this love is only going to get even better. Emphasized as she expressed in the song by repetition.. bettah bettah bettah better better!!! Remember, its called FIDELITY , a term for clear and atuned understanding. She's discovered true love and is saying "Ah Haa!". It's a love song, pure and simple.

I like your interpretation, hautehautehaute. The lines about "and it breaks my heart," "all my friends say..." make me think that she'd suffered some kind of pain. It seems to me that something bad happened, but that she's still grateful for having experienced love. Whether this is a good or bad thing is up to the listener, I suppose, but I never felt that this song was negative. I like the idea of the "pain" being less of a pain, more of an overwhelming rush of emotion. I think everyone here has some pretty interesting comments to make. Fantastic song.

she prepared herself for the fall, so she kept herself closer to her because she knew the heartbreak was coming. and it came, but it still breaks her heart, in this way that she wants love in.

I agree with hautehautehaute also. It's such a bittersweet song. I think it kind of has an element of "What if I had left myself keep going the way I was? Would I be happy and safe? But look at what I have now, it's hard, but amaizng. What if i never let myself expierience it?" overwhelming is the perfect word.

agree with hautehautehaute, i think it's about finding love and the wonder of it after resisting it for so long and protecting herself from falling. even the last verse talks about this new experience of love, not so much the pain of heartbreak, but the pain of falling after locking herself away so long.

Yeah, I agree with venus. She's trapping herself in a world of creation to stay away from the dangers of reality and love and loss and everything. Even though it's not as much expressed in the song as it is in the video, I think it's also about breaking out of that box of delusion to face what can turn out to be a good thing.

i disagree with the idea that the second verse expresses regret for having fallen in love. i think that it's more the idea that "it's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all." when she says, "suppose" over and over, the phrases that follow are all so positive. she also sings with the dreamy tone of recalling fond memories; she's trying to imagine what she would be like or where she would be without these experiences. she wouldn't have had these great memories, and she wouldn't have learned so much. it's really very bittersweet, because obviously she's loved and learned, but also lost in the process.

I disagree with many of the comments - I think the narrator is still in love. In the first verse, she talks about how she always protected herself and then went crazy in her own thoughts. I think that "and it breaks my heart" refers to thinking about how closed off she used to be before she experienced true love. I think the second verse is so joyful and even intimate. What if she continued to block herself from the intimacy and happiness that she seems to be describing here? I do think that there is an element of pain, but i think that the pain she's feeling is the intense emotion of falling in love after closing herself off to it for so long. Overwhelmed, I guess. Amazing song! So beautiful.

absolutely lovely. I think it's about her resisting love but falling in love anyway. and the second verse is about her wishing that she hadn't fallen in love and had not let him in because obviously her heart is broken. but maybe the song has nothing to do with music. the music and words she hears symbolize the happiness she felt when she was in love. and it breaks her heart because she wishes she could hear those things and feel the same way again.

yep, i think venus in mohair got it right. it's not as lyrically dense as some of regina's other cryptically versed songs, so it's pretty straightforward. i think in the second verse, in addition to wanting to protect herself from heartbreak, she finds herself also regretting her decision to let him in and she contemplates if it had been better to live within the imagination of the songs rather than the real life experiences she had with the guy. ("suppose I never ever saw you, suppose I kept on singing love songs just to break my own fall"). it could also be about missed opportunities - maybe she had to let him go to seriously pursue her music. and while the music soothes her, it also breaks her heart because she is reminded of what she left him for and contemplates her decision. this song reminds me of the first time i heard a regina song a year or so ago and immediately thought, "i'm really gonna like her". now i can't wait to get the album! *long wait* i think regina has outdone herself with this one. i always think she has, but then she comes and surprises again.
