| "But its so hard to see The reality That the end will be The end of things Our hearts are all we get to bring So let's go ahead and make them worth something?" it means that when life is over thats if you dont get a second chance. you better be saved cuz ur heart is all you get to bring so it better have jesus or you wont have heaven...BTW swimandy i say all three of your meanings are right | |

| I love this song, but i'm not really sure what it means. It's either one of three things i think. I think it's either saying that we shouldn't get involved in relationships and get so worried about them that we forget about god.... or else that we shouldn't worry about what other people say about us because he is saying everyone is laughing at him and no one will ever be content (even though he is) so he's just not going to worry about it..... or the last one is about going out and being a disciple of god and helping people see the truth this line is where i'm getting this one possibly from----"I must admit that all the words you spoke, I hated Cause I don't see how I can be motivated Enough to break a sweat over this dying race It seems their fate is something they've already embraced" ---- he's saying how he thinks it's almost hopeless and he's just apathetic to them.... i really don't think my last interpretation is right... i have no clue if any of mine are right... so someone else comment and tell me if you think i am even close, thanks, the song is great! | |

| I think its talking about multiple aspects of apathy. But its all the Christian talking to his non-Christian friends. They think he is apathetic (and laughable) because he doesnt care about the temporal things of this world ("The things that matter to you they don't matter to me"). He doesnt care about relationships like they do ("Emotional attatchment is really not a threat/When I am simply not concerned"). And he doesnt care about material stuff ("Cause I know no one will ever be content/With the way things are or with what they've got"). Meanwhile he is thinking they are apathetic (and sad) that they dont care about God ("The reality/That the end will be/The end of things/Our hearts are all we get to bring/So let's go ahead and make them worth something"). But it seems like he is angry with himself for not caring enough that they dont care about God...if that makes sense. He realises that their apathy has them hell-bound, but isnt taking that to heart as much as he should and isnt doing enough about it. Someone must have challenged him on that ("I must admit that all the words you spoke, I hated/Cause I don't see how I can be motivated/Enough to break a sweat over this dying race"). I think these two aspects he touches on explain the chorus. "And the half of me/Is all about apathy" - he doesnt care about the stuff of this world (which is good). However; "And the other half/Just doesn't care" - he doesnt care about the fact that other people are hell-bound. He's saying apathy is good in some aspects, but bad in others. In the end, hes challenging us to look at ourselves and work out where we sit in it all. "I'm well aware that everything is a far cry from alright" - lets make sure we care about the dying world around us. "I'm well aware that all of us can at times be too uptight" - but lets not care so much about the world that we love it. "And possibly the remedy is a dose of apathy/You point your finger at you, and I'll point mine right back at me" - work out for yourself who you are in this story. That's my take, anyway. I'll stop blabbing now. | |

| Oh, and pies r square, yeah, I think to some degree it's ok for different people to get different significant meanings out of songs, but it's kind of important what the writer actually intended (same with reading the bible). There could be some really dodgy interpretations (eg see ReliAnt K, "Breakdown" comment!) | |

| Hey rock on guys, I really liked reading all your interpretations. They all make good sense, but I really liked the way Ondistantshores unpacked the whole song and explained each little bit. It's funny, I have never really thought that much about what it means, just thought I love that line "And the half of me is all about apathy, and the other half just doesn't care" because I thought haha, they mean the same thing, so basically he's saying he couldn't be bothered caring about anything (and sometimes I identify with that!!). But the way you explained it as being I'm apathetic about worldly things cos I know they have no eternal significance (and that's good), but I'm also apathetic about the fate of the people around me cos I care more about myself (and that's bad) seems very likely. There's a real challenge in that isn't there? Don't get sucked in by the world, but love people enough to show them the truth. | |

| I think the same thing as SwimAndy about those lines. When life ends, all you have is your heart, so make it "worth something," make good use of it. | |

| uh, i THINK your 2nd one is pretty close..... well, close to my meaning. yeah.... i think this song about this dude who believes in god. the other people around that person laughs and teases him, but he doesn't care. "The things that matter to you they don't matter to me Cause I don't care" i guess the other people are so caught up with what others will think of them, but the other guy (the christian) doesn't. he doesn't care if others don't like him because he worships god. i don't know. it is hard to explain. well, that is what I THINK anyways. it could be totally wrong, but isn't the meaning of a song what you make of it? | |

| Well, i think those lines means that when you die you're only going to bring your hearts (and all the good you've done) to heaven, so you should make what you do worth something and do good things... at least that's what i think, but i'm not sure | |

| I've always thought something completely different. I have always thought that this song was about being apathetic about your relationship with God, and finally seeing how upset it makes you and changing that. Then he goes on to talk about how he should care about people not being saved, and how it's frustrating that they care too much about the world, and he says that they should be apathetic, but not about God, like he used to be, they should be apathetic about the world. I don't know... that's just what I've always understood. | |

| I think it's about believing in God he is talking to his non-christian friends. And saying that he doesn't care about what they're saying. We should not feel apathy over the others just because they don't believe in what we belive in. It's sickening that people want conformity always and always I just don't get it. Well this song is really good to listen to. So take a wild guess it's Like I just couldn't care less if All the things you find impressive Lurve this verse. I really think he want us to be one of a kind... | |

| Yeah Id say you got it Ondistantshores. the part about everybody thinking that everybody else is apathetic is exactly what ive always thought. i think its funny that youre the 1st person to talk about the apathy in this song considering thats what its all about. | |
