basically it's talking about how people (especially teens) have trends that everyone HAS to do unless they're made fun of for it. I can say this, because I am teen and I live in that world.

"And I just want to get mugged at knifepoint To get cut enough to wake me up Cause I know that I don't want to die Sitting around watching my life go by And what we take from this is what we'll get And we haven't quite figured it out just yet Because all of us are all to stuck Strapped to a chair watching out lives blow up Stuck watching our lives blow up" I LOVE this bit. It's one of my favorite lyrics of all time.

I like this song, and I'd say it's slowly becoming one of my favorites. I love the last line and how it builds up, "Stuck watching our lives blow up." Anyway, as far as what it means, I think it's talking how this guy's so caught up in the moment and what seems right at the time, but in the end, realizes that he needs a wake up call. God had showed him the right way, but he chose to ignore it, thinking he could figure things out his own way, but then realized that his own way doesn't work at all.

ehhhh not one of their best songs on the new cd... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And this week the trend Was to backstab every single one of my friends And leave a voicemail message trying to make amends All the while hoping things work out in the end (although i do like THIS verse... its so funny how that actually seems to be the "trend" a lot of the time...)

i love this song, this relates to my life before i accepted jesus. i thought my life was fine the way it was and i didnt care. i think alot of the "trends" are funny because it actually seems like in our life now if someone "popular" did one of those i wouldnt be suprised if everyone followed...

Love this song... the best part is: "And I just want to get mugged at knife point To get cut enough to wake me up Cause I know that I don't want to die Sitting around watching my life go by And what we take from this is what we'll get And we haven't quite figured it out just yet Because all of us are all to stuck Strapped to a chair watching out lives blow up Stuck watching our lives blow up." It's very deep...

** And this week the trend Was to not wake up till 3pm I picked the few conscious hours that I chose to spend And slept away the rest of them ** >> I take this verse as trying to escape your life. You choose to sleep the day away because you are either getting tired of the same old things in your life or you are sick of all the problems you have. You just want to escape from it and not have to face it. ** And this week the trend Was to crash and burn and then return again To practice the life that I pretend Provides enough to get me through the weekend ** >> This verse talks about our life. How we live our life differently in front of other people. The line "crash and burn and then return again" talks about how we tend to dramatize our life (I think). How we set ourselves up just to see something happening in our life. The line "To practice the life that I pretend" is a further dwelling on the topic. We practice the act of making drama in our life and that "Provides enough to get me through the weekend". ** So I say Give me a solution And watch me run with it And then you gave You gave me a solution What have I done with it Cause I was absolutely sure I had it all figured out Way back then And now it's this minute, This hour, This day ** >>The chorus focuses a bit on how we know the solution to our problem yet we do not do anything about it. We have asked for the solution and we already have it. Yet still, we do not do anything. The line "Cause I was absolutely sure I had it all figured out way back then" talks about how we have already got through this before. But now it's back, it's either we are too tired to face it or we simply are too busy dramatizing our life to have time to fix it. We do not know what the problem is, but the truth is, the problem is right in front of us... ** And this week the trend Was to backstab every single one of my friends And leave a voicemail message trying to make amends All the while hoping things work out in the end ** >>I have two concepts for this verse. The first one is trying to make good deeds. In the situation, I can imagine a person doing bad things to his friends but has already planned to say sorry after the trouble. He hurts people but he only does so he can say sorry. And saying sorry after a wrongdoing is considered a good deed. Maybe the "All the while hoping things work out in the end" is a reference to those deeds helping you in the end? The second concept is quite simpler. Maybe it is a literal verse, coming in with the whole idea of a person who has nothing to do but make his life a little more dramatic. It adds to the idea the others have given. ** And this week the trend Was to borrow all the strength that you could lend To keep my head above the water and not descend Back to where I said I'd never go again ** >>Again, more of the so-called "drama". The line "Was to borrow all the strength that you could lend" is a direct shot at the idea we have formed. You ask help from someone even though you could handle things on your own. You act like you cannot handle it but you are fully capable of doing it, if not better. The 3rd and 4th line is about the fear of the person to go back to that problem that has been eating him. He is asking help to face it yet he could do it by myself. How ironic. ** So I say Give me a solution And watch me run with it And then you gave You gave me a solution What have I done with it Cause I was absolutely sure I had it all figured out Way back then But after this day it's this week all over again ** >>It is almost the same as the first chorus except the last line. He is going through his life yet he is not trying to fix the problem. "But after this day it's this week all over again" is talking about how the problem won't go away and how it will just go on and on and on until he tries to fix it. Apparently, he doesn't want to make a move. ** And I just want to get mugged at knifepoint To get cut enough to wake me up Cause I know that I don't want to die Sitting around watching my life go by ** >>At knifepoint, just enough to wake him up. He is talking about wanting something to happen that would cause him to act. He is basically waiting for a big day where he will start to act right. Why? "Cause I know that I don't want to die, sitting around watching my life go by". He doesn't want his life to go to waste on a single problem. He just can't let it consume his time. But nothing motivates him to act. The only turning point would be the happening of the particular event which would cause him to change. ** And what we take from this is what we'll get And we haven't quite figured it out just yet Because all of us are all to stuck Strapped to a chair watching out lives blow up Stuck watching our lives blow up ** >>"And we haven't quite figured it out just yet" is talking about how he is still not motivated enough. He says that all of us are still stuck in our "drama" of a life watching ourselves fall apart. Thus the lines "Stuck watching our lives blow up". We play our life on a stage that only we know the script, and it is eating us up. Even though we can fix the problem, we are still waiting for the right moment where we would turn around and head on to a new direction. That is my take on the song. maybe it doesnt coincide with others opnions but thats my take on it.:)

This song isnt my favorite on this CD, but it could easily become my favorite as my mood changes. I like the 'I just want to get mugged at knifepoint to get cut enough to wake me up cause I know that I dont want to die' part. Ever need a change? Something like that can totally change everything. Sometimes all it takes to start appreciating things again is to almost lose them.

Love this song. Today happened to be the day that it was stuck in my head so I thought it would be appropriate to type in my favorite line from the song into Google and see what I found. Randomly I was lead here. Btw the line was. "And I just want to get mugged at knifepoint to get cut enough to wake me up" Anyway this song is very simple to get. It’s about a person (teenage boy most likely) who is really bored. He picks a few hours of the day to actually live and the rest he just sleeps away. He talks about the trends of the week like backstabbing his friends and trying to make amends. He talks of gaining the strength to keep his head above the water (surviving the week) to never go to that place again which is probably depression from being so bored. He also talks of "Was to crash and burn and then return again to practice the life that I pretend. Provides enough to get me through the weekend" This basically means he goes through life on autopilot (apathetically trying) just to give him something to do because he’s bored. He realizes his boredom is leading to a person he never wanted to be. This is when he says "And I just want to get mugged at knife point to get cut enough to wake me up" which means what it says" he doesn’t want to be this person anymore so he wants to get cut because that would wake him up. (Of course he’s not serious about getting cut, he's talking about a philosophical wake-up) "Cause I know that I don't want to die Sitting around watching my life go by" This means he doesn’t want to die knowing that he sat around watching his life waste away. The next couple of lines also relate to that because he talks of not completely figuring it out yet because they are all stuck in this funk. They are stuck just looking at their wasteful lives. I imagine this relates to drugs, as his friends and he are looking at what they've become and think they are "stuck" as they watch themselves spiral out of control. I Hope that made sense.

i l.o.v.e. this song! i dont think it has the greatest sound, but one day it hit me what the words really mean.. and i can apply them so much to my life! its about how sometimes we just live, i mean somedays i feel like im not even really here, i just go doing my regular schedule and forget about God....i just ignore Him. but as i listened to this song one day, it just hit me, this is what i need. i need God to slap me on the face, wake me up, and get me to live like i should be and stop procrastinating and watching my life pass by. i think this is what they were really trying get at.

failureofreality, i think most of your opinion is right on. The only thing I think that doesn't go with mine is "And this week the trend was to borrow all the strength that you could lend" part. I think it's aimed at God. Relient K is undeniably a christian band. That part of the song also goes along with the end of Be My Escape... "All I was trying to do was save my own skin, but so were You". He keeps trying to save himself, but he needs the strength from God to really fix it. He need God to shock him into action. That theme also leads into Apathetic Way To Be. That you need to make your heart worth something, instead of superficial things, and and watching life go by.

I love the "i just wanna get mugged at knife point..." even though most of my friends don't get it... it's just about realising that you need something huge to shake your life around.
