Friends of P
by David Dineen-Porter
"I was watching MTV the other day, and a song by the Rentals came on. I'm not
totally sure, but it looks like the lead singer is no other than Matt Sharp
from Weezer (did they split up?), when I recorded it on tape, I realized the
drummer is Patrick Wilson, the drummer for Weezer, no clue who the other
two guys are, but I'm pretty sure they're not Rivers Cuomo and Bryan Bell."
by Ben Wampler
I'd like to thank Ben for getting the TAB completly wrong, and allowing me to
fix it. BTW, weezer did not split up, they are still playing to gether, Matt
Sharp is in both bands, as is Pat Wilson, the new Weezer CD should be out by
the summer of 1996.
"Anyway, I thought I'd just TAB it out to the best I can."
By Ben Wampler
You didn't do very well, but it's ok.

| I'm not going to deny that Paulina Porizkova is P, but the psychic angle is much more evident to those not so sharp on Matt's history (ha). "Somebody's fame and fortune is gonna come to me early, I've got two loves in my life and I'm dying at 90" Seems that prediction was incorrect. He's not that famous and nobody loves him. | |

| I work for an entertainment magazine and I spoke with Matt Sharp yesterday. Here is what he told me about the song: "It is about Ric Ocasek wife Paulina Porizkova. Ric produced the first weezer record. His wife would come down while we were recording and she would do these palm readings. She was a very bright woman, and she would always do these palm readings for fun. She said the only people that have ever written her a song…she was a supermodel in the 80’s…the only people were these bad heavy metal bands…that night I went in the hotel that Pat Wilson and I were staying at and we said we had to bring her in and write a song about her for fun." | |

| Regardless of what the chorus might have been written for originally (i.e. a crush who's name starts with P), in this song the P stands for Psychics. I like what jasop said about the Psychic Friends Network. That's clever. The rest of the song is make believe of what a Psychic might tell him. And it's futuristic, not historical. It has nothing to do with Weezer. And for those who think his fame and fortune was only from riding the Rivers Cuomo wagon, you're only partly right. Matt co-wrote many of the songs on the Blue Album and Pinkerton. And you don't notice it, but he sings a high pitched overtone in many of the Weezer songs, which brings in a harmony that compliments River's voice very well. Everyone in Weezer had side bands, or solo projects. His was just the most successful. Of course, teaming up with members of That Dog helped. Did I mention I'm a fan... | |

| Towards the end of my senior year in high school myself and a couple friends were filming a student film about a student who dies drunk driving. While filming the scene where he passes out at the wheel, my friend leaned on the steering wheel, careening his Jeep Cherokee down the cliff we were driving parallel to. This is the song we were playing. (btw the footage we got for our movie was great and we didn't die) | |

| Heh. He says he loves two people in his life, not nessisarily that they love him back. Though that's a logical assumption. However, he's only like 40 and we knoew very little of his personal life. He could have already have had one or both of those loves. Or one could be his love of music. He did have some modest fame and fortune, and he was fairly young when it came to him. Partly from this song, ironically. The Rentals have reformed, however, so its possible he might generate a little more fame. We'll see. | |

| wait, before we say the prediction is incorrect, lets interpret it this way.. "Somebody's fame and fortune is gonna come to me early, I've got two loves in my life and I'm dying at 90" "Somebodys fame and fortune" could be referring to the royalties to River Cuomo's songs such as Sweater Song and many more, which he sued for in 2002 (i think thats the year).at the time this song was written, he wasnt recieving credit for writing any of the blue album. His two loves could be reffering his band (the rentals) and Weezer. and for "Dying at 90", think of it as THE 90's. His 15 minutes of fame in weezer was in the 90s, and then his career DIED. | |
