#----------------------------------------------------------------------------#

the guitar and bass start off like this, bass doesn't do second string work.

-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------
------------------------------------- Repeat twice
-------------------------------------
----5---5---5---5---5---5---5---5----
--2---2---3---3---7---7---5---5------

then this is the natural harmonics part.
--------------------------------------
----7-------7-------7---------7-------
--------7-------7-------7---------7--- Repeat several times
------7---7---7---7---7---7-7---7-----
--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------

the guitar does this:
--------------------------------------5-------
-7---7---7---5-7-5------7---7---7-7-8---8-7-5-
---7---7---7-------7------7---7---------------
----------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------
-7---7---------------------------------------------
---7---7-------------------------------------------
----------/9-7-7-7-/9-7----------------------------
------------------------10-9-5----5-7-5-7/9-10-9-7-
---------------------------------------------------

then right to this:
----------------------------------------------------
10p8p7--10p8p7-----(7)-----10p8p7-------------------
---------------(7)-----(7)----------7/97----------- Repeat
------------------------------------------7/97/97-
----------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------
there are two guitars on this song and they don't always play it the same, sometimes they
play the notes in parenthesis and then sometimes they don't..

this is the little thing right before the singing:
--------------------------
--------------------------
-------0------------------
---------4-0-0-----7/97--
--------------------------
-3-3-3--------------------

that's it, just go through the different parts!

for the chorus, you can try a few natural harmonic parts and perhaps a little slide for
the guitar on the "hospitals and freeways" parts, but it won't sound perfectly correct:
--------/////14------------
---------------------------
----7----------------------
------7--------------------
---------------------------
--------------------------

"they say CA" ... up through the "ready to go" these frets sound right.
The little mini-solo thing near the end is:

14-14-14-12-14-12-14-15-- (high E string) repeat 3x

17-17-17-19-19-19-21-21-21-22-22-22- (high E string)

I think this is my favorite Rilo Kiley song. I love the ending, when both Jenny and Blake are singing.

I used to love this song, I still do but now its more of a remembering song. This is what I was listening to when I found out that my uncle died. It was really creepy, especially with the lyrics echoing "when your dead..." So this song always makes me think of him.

I feel like this song is just about trying to get your shit together like we all are, feeling scared just about life I think the way Jenny keeps repeating, "cuz im not scared" means she really is, but the whole when you're dead part kind of throws me off... maybe just about trying to get it togerther before that, you know with a ticking clock and also just feeling so owerwelmed "and it must be nice to finish...when your dead" idk but i love, love, love rilo kiley and and love when jenny lewis says "fuck" ...and mexico can fuckin wait theres something so thrilling about such a pure voice saying that, its really powerful...especially in "A Better Son or Daughter...great song

I reckon Rilo Kiley is just another 90's college rock influenced band thats out today. You know, the kind of band that lasted on a steady diet of The Pixies, Dinosaur Jr. and what not back in the 90s. But they do something so much different with those influences, its great
