Ripchord
Rilo Kiley
more adventurous

this song is really easy. i tabbed it out in like 5 minutes but i don't think it is wrong.
it's close enough anyway to give you an idea. some chords of
seem more abstract than the things i write, but do for yourself. check it...

some of these power chords you can play open if you want, but when i saw them live he played
them all as 5's (powerchords)

The only best thing about this song is that it is the most delicate comedown after the superior mountain-climbing song before it in the CD - Portions for Foxes

Bullshit. None of it had to do with the controversy of Elliott Smith's death. He fucking off'd himself. That's what he wanted. That was the kind of life he envisioned for himself. And that's OK. "I don't know if you meant it" is talking about anybody's possible reluctence/regret of suicide. But, for the sum, this is most likely about ES. After all, Blake Sennett was a friend of his and he recorded his first Elected album in Elliott Smith's studio.

I definitely would not be surprised if this song was about Elliott Smith. Not only does the "we found out we lost you part" clue us in, but also the very last part "in the singing and the strumming, oh man I even saw it coming" really could relate to Elliott. I know that after he died, I was listening to a lot of his songs and thought that I probably could have known that his life would end that way.

Yes, the song is about Elliott Smith and so is "It Just Is" (wikipedia's Elliott page should be proof enough, because it lists many other tributes to him, this being one of the best in my opinion). Whoever mentioned the Lewis-Smith muse thing, is also dead on, same with the person who said alot of More Adventurous has to do with Elliott. Blake and Jenny are big fans and so are alot of the Omaha crew (conor, azure ray, tilly and the wall and all the Park Ave people for that matter etc etc etc). It should also be noted that the line "so cmon kid, look at what you did" is a reference to "Needle in The Hay". Also, aot of this circle (Omaha scene) uses the word "kid" in context when referring to each other and their drug problems (see: Lua by Bright Eyes). Whoever mentioned the talented Jeff Buckley should listen to "Memphis Skyline" by Rufus Wainwright if you are lookin for a Buckley tribute. Some other notable Elliott inspired tracks: "Late" by Ben Folds (Songs for Silverman) "Mr. Smith Goes to Heaven" by Earlimert (lead singer LOVED elliott and mimicks him quite often) "You, Me and a Knife" by theSTART I am a huge Elliott Smith fan and I would love to help anyone with questions in any way that I can. I am actually currently writing a play that is to Elliott Smith what Gus Van Sant's "Last Days" was to Kurt Cobain. On a sidenote, Van Sant (also a musician) was one of Elliotts biggest fans, hence the Good Will Hunting stint. if you all have a myspace, hit me up sometime. www.myspace.com/IvanxDurham

This is about Elliott Smith. You haven't heard this song until you hear it live. It is absolutely amazing. It's such a sad song but when they play it live it becomes so happy and everyone is clapping and smiling and it is wonderful, it feels like christmas.

The good that wont come out " Lets talk about all of our friends who lost the war and all of the novels that have yet to be written about them..." could also be a reference to Elliot Smith

actually, i've heard that a large part of the album is about Eliott Smith-- accidntel deth, parts of does he love you, jim etc, it just is, and this of course. but, like, listen to blake sennet's voice (the guy vocals in all the rilo songs, in case you didn't know), and it sometimes sounds A LOT like elliott's. particularly in this song, and rest of my life (that one is actually really eerie). jenny has often considered smith a muse, and it shows in a lot of rilo's music, in my opinion. ...just something i thought was interesting.

Also, the verse where it says "i don't know if you meant it but you did yourself in". There was some controversy over whether or not Elliott's death was suicide or murder, though it was pronounced to be suicide, regardless of suspicions. Hence: "I dont know if you meant it.." I am a huge fan of Elliott Smith, and Rilo Kiley,a dn I love how they wrote these songs with a tribute formation to Elliott.

Elliot Smith doesn't strike me as the type much interested in diamond rings, though.

That's weird. I was so sure this song was about the tragic death of Jeff Buckley... He went swimming randomly in his clothes in the Wolf River one day back in 1997 and drowned. There was a lot of talk about it being a suicide, though it was ruled an accidental drowning. "The ship has lost its sail" refers to drowning, and "I don't know if you meant it/ but you did yourself in" refers to the mysterious nature of his death. Also, the lyrics "even fancy things/ have finally lost their charm/ wine and diamond rings/ they never get you anymore" fit with his lavish style and subject matter - he even has a song called "Lilac Wine." Doesn't anybody else think this song is about Jeff Buckley?

that's an interesting idea, about elliott smith. It does in fact fit pretty well, obviously the ending, when "we found out we lost you."
