Rilo Kiley : The Execution of All Things
Tabbed by:Philip Lee (philip2136@yahoo.com)
Intro: B C# A B
E F# A E
E F# A
Soldiers come quickly, I feel the earth beneath my feet.
I'm feeling badly, it's not an attempt at decency.
And if you're well off, well then I'm happy some for you.
But I'd rather not celebrate my defeat and
C#m B E
humiliation here with you.
Someone come quickly, this place was built for moving out. Leave behind buildings, the
planners got mapped out. Bring with you history and make your hard earned feast. Then
go to Omaha, to work and exploit the
C#m B A C E
booming music scene and humility.
Bm A G F#7
Bm A G F#7
And we've been talking all night....
(Instrumental over verse chords)
Solo:

-------------|-------------|-----------|---------|-------------------|----------------|----------------|
-------------|-------------|-----------|---------|-------------------|----------------|----------------|
Oh god come quickly, for the execution of all things. Let's start with the bears and
air and then mountains rivers and streams. Then we'll murder what matters to you and
move
to your neighbors and kids. Crush all hopes of happiness with disease cause of what you
did.

-------------------------------------------|
-------------------------------------------|
And lastly, you're all alone with nothing left but sleep. But sleep never comes to you,
just the guilt and forever

wakefulness of the weak. It's just you and me....
The execution of all things.

| ok, i was high the other day and i started imagining this song was about a "sassy space princess" aka Jenny from a race evolved from humans (they moved away to some planet when we started declining bigtime somewhere in the future) who comes alone with some military people to observe the human race. (her and one soldier have a love affair.) yeah, it's total bullshit, but it's fun to think about. and i also think she's looking at the human race from a really objective point of view which may have triggered the story. way to go rilo kiley. | |

| I get the impression that a man has confessed deception/infidelity, and his (ex-)girlfriend must spend the night with him anyway, reflecting on larger issues of exploitation, guilt, and revenge. She begs soldiers or God or "someone" to kill her or take her away, because she feels too "badly" (shocked, sickened, depressed) to articulate her condemnation or leave immediately. "It's not an attempt at decency," she's just paralyzed. As in "A Better Son/Daughter," I think Rilo Kiley fluidly shifts cases - i.e., sometimes "you" applies to the singer - and ultimately she can't distinguish her guilt - for not leaving or for other errors - from "what [her partner] did." She experiences "the guilt and forever / wakefulness of the weak," concluding hatefully that she and her partner are one and the same, and that everything is a mess. I had to share my bed with an ex-boyfriend once after a late-night breakup, and it's definitely provocative of conflicted empathy and self-loathing. | |

| I don't think you can say it's all about the environment because some stuff doesn't fit, like "the booming music scene." It seems like it's about beautiful, original things--music, culture, nature--being appropriated/exploited. My idea: the last verse is someone getting fed up with life and destroying all of G-d's creations to punish Him for creating so much pain. I know it's not really that, but it's an interesting idea. | |

| oh yeah and as for the whole smoking thing. it's great how TROTSKY has never tried any drugs obviously but if someone else has don't sit there and preach to them about how bad it is. everyone who smokes knows it's bad and if you still do it it's not cause you can't stop, it's cause you don't want to. let people do what they want. and as the old saying goes "don't knock it till you try it!" | |

| I think this song has meaning on many different levels, it could be applied to war between countries, or to a war between two people, a break up. When i listen to it, i mainly think about it as a person that was deeply hurt by someone and hasa lot of resentment cuz of what they did. "And if you’re well off, well then I’m happy some for you. But I’d rather not celebrate my defeat and humiliation here with you. " That shows that shes "happy" for how the other person is, but she doesnt want to stick around with that person because he reminds her of the humiliation she went thru with him. And all that anger she has comes thru in the next lines when shes talkin about executing everything that matters to that person..."friends...family...bears and the air...etc etc" And at the end, is the best part of the song... "And lastly, you’re all alone with nothing left but sleep. But sleep never comes to you, it’s just the guilt and forever wakefulness of the weak. It’s just you and me…. " After executing everything that the person cares about, and goes to find peace in his sleep, sleep wont come to that person, because all he is left with is guilt...BRILLIANT! The guilt=him, the weak=her I think this is her most powerful song, Jenny is a poet of our times. | |

Or you're such a sad person the only thing of relevence you can think that defines who you are is your drug use. Talk to me in about 15 years when your cleaning the windshield on my BMW. | |

| This song is beautiful...I love the bass line in the verse as well as the rockin' guitar solo. In my opinion, this is the best song on the cd. Rilo Kiley is a extremely talented band and T.E.O.A.T. is an album that every saddle creek fan should own. | |

| though my friends say that my take on t.e.o.a.t is rather unnerving, i'll share it with you anyways. this song seems to be a bittersweet goodbye. sort of like one of those big grins before you hang yourself. the lyrics and the tone make it seem as if you've done your share of rocking the world, and that you're prepared to leave and let the world live on. which also reminds me of the dismemberment plan... | |

| I think this song is about the narrator's huge overreaction to some event and then her embarassment at how she acted. It's almost sarcastic like she's using humour/cynicism as a defense against whoever is judging her. | |
