| i think it's about fear of your potential, as a person and in a relationship -- and the insecurities that cause such fear and hesitation. she captures the fear of living, and the fear of true commitment. How can a person expose his/herself so completely and vulnerably if he or she is not comfortable with who he or she is? of course this is only one component of the song -- and an obvious one at that -- but it's one that really affects me, and that i can relate to. this is the song i sing in the shower most often.. :) | |

| I honestly can't get enough of this song. "And how eventually my mouth will just turn to dust If I don't tell you quick Standing here on this frozen lake" anyone get how this relates to the rest of the song? to me it doesn't quite fit but I'd love to hear any other interpretations.. | |

| this song is about how people just sit there and do nothing about problems and things that are wrong that they clearly see what choose to pass by. "I do this thing where I think I'm real sick But I won't go to the doctor to find out about it Because they make you stay real still In a real small space As they chart up your insides and put them on display They'd see all of it, all of me, all of it" this is her way of saying she's ashamed of herself for not saying anything to what is wrong. | |

| Is it just me, or does Jen Wood seem like the kind of singer who wouldn't swear? Anyways, I love her voice and her emotion in the lyrics in pretty much every Rilo Kiley song... great band | |

| I agree with you Shmac215, but I think part of it is about bottling up your emotions and "not going to the doctor to find out about it." So feeling shitty about something but not bothering with it or acting on it and staying on the "frozen lake" until your "mouth turns to dust" because you're not talking about it to solve the problem. | |

| I think it is partly about people who complain about everything, but just stand by idle, instead of trying to change it. She is saying in the song that she is doing the same, and no good will come out of her, because she too is standing there idlely. Example is the first stanza, they ar complaining about the grownd melting, and they are just standing there watching it happen. | |

| i think that the part oh you're almost home i've been waiting for you to come in dancing around in your old suits going crazy in your room again could be talking about someone who has died. It's saying you're waiting for them to come back but they won't ever so you go through there things because if you're looking at their room it's like they're with you | |

| hi, im new here. i think this song is mainly about taking things for granted, about how we all just focus on all the negative things that will happen and never the positive. i guess i am basically saying the same as shmac, she notices all of these things but does nothing to change it. i am not very good at this so, im sorry, haha. | |

| just to add to you, dancinthemoonlight, it's also about being afraid to admit things to yourself, especially in the context of relationships. She's hurting herself by turning away from the fact that this guy keeps mistreating her, over and over again. In other words, yes it is about keeping your mouth shut in the face of problems, but only because you're scared of the consequences, which of course, is ironic, since the consequence of saying nothing at all is silent suffering. | |

| yeah yeah whatever, but that first verse reminds me of everyone i know and myself. all these hipsters walk around, "howie hawkins this, green party that, fuck global warming, let's change things by becoming vegan and taking all the tags off these clothes that were made by children" and they have fucking pets and stand around talking shit about the gov't, about pop culture, about the state of america. "talking shit about how we're all so upset about the disappearing ground, as we watch it melt" so the polar ice caps are melting due to global warming, and everyone and their pets are oh so concerned. | |

| i've always had plans to paint this song on a canvas and hang it in my room. and then when people see it they'll read it, not get it, and give me funny looks. and i won't say how it bothers me, 'cause when have i ever used my words? it's the good that won't come out of me. | |

| well (sorry if I'm stating the obvious) "tell you quick" means that she knows she needs to tell someone something, but she's too lazy/scared, so she doesn't, an example of "the good that won't come out." (what a fucking amazing song title) I would guess that the "you" is the person she talks about whose warm embrace she shouldn't be lying in, and that she knows she should break up with them, but is just staying in this relationship. If you wanted (I don't know if I do) you could read everything as the song as being a reference to the boring, sad relationship: that the couple have all these useless friends that they sit around being useless with, they have depressing useless conversations where the guy tells Jenny she chooses sadness and she's like "oh yeah, I guess" and doesn't change her attitude at all. I don't know about the old suits part though, that makes me think of death. The mouth turning to dust just means that if she keeps not doing what she should, she probably never will. I can't put into words what the frozen lake thing means exactly, but I think it's just meant to suggest the good that won't come out: like water is trapped inside the ice, the good is trapped inside her. | |
