and i cant tell if youre laughing between each smile theres a tear in your eye theres a train leaving town in an hour its not waiting for you, and neither am i when i hear this i think of a guy whos fed up with his girlfriend, shes very up and down with her emotions and hes tired of waiting for her to make up her mind/decide/change ..? so he is leaving town, and hes not waiting for her, and neither is the train.

That verse makes me think that too, but not the rest of the lyrics. But then again, that is what is so great about music, you can take what you want from it. The rest of the lyrics make me think of someone who is a bit aimless in their life. Just following what was set out for them (it makes me think of someone in their early 20's who hasn't figured out what they are doing in life yet).

I think that this song is about potential... The verse that starts with "Swing for the fences son..." tells us that the person has potential, but chooses to let it go, and not use it. But is we consider the last verse "Is this the life that you lead..." kind of tells us that this potential may be to choose what he wants to do. The first verse is quite vague with the meaning, but the third verse and fourth verse help us to understand the whole potential theme. The second verse "And I Can't tell if your laughing..." I think means that is the person doesn't use this potential then the train will not leave with him on it. This song tells us to use the potential to choose to its full limits, and tells us not to be apathetic.

This was the first and only Rise Against song I have ever heard. It brought a bit of a new edge to all of the music I started to like, which I don't like anymore because I kind of progressed. But anyway I respect this song is what I mean to say...Moving on: This song is about people wasting all of their potential "ive watched you fly on paper wings halfway around the world until they burned up in the atmosphere and sent you spiraling down" Is a reference to Iscarus, which is some sort of legendy thingy. Yeah so this Iscarus dude and his Dad were been imprisoned, and to make a break for it they made these wingy thingies out of wax, and before they flew off away from the prisony place Iscarus' Dad told him not to fly too close to the sun. So kiddies, what did Iscarus do? That's right he dared to fly next to the sun, and his wax wings melted and so he fell down down down and landed in the sea and drowned. So basically that line adds to the songs theme of wasting your potential where yew could be sky high yew kinda fall rock bottom. "theres a train leaving town in an hour its not waiting for you and neither am I" that line is saying that whoever is talking about this person wasting their potential doesn't want to wait around anymore for them to start using it and getting where they should be in life. "'swing for the fences son' they must have told you once that was a conversation you took nothing from" means that they were told continuously to try their best but they never did. Well...hope that helped a little =]

plain and simple, another great song from one of the greatest and most underrated bands. quite simply, anyone who doesn't acknowledge rise against to be a great band just does not no music.

i love this song and it means a lot to me - but english is not my mother-tongue and i don't understand the phrase 'swing for the fences' "loneliverock" said something about: that the person has potential, but chooses to let it go... is that right? can someone explain this saying to me?
