I'm not sure if this is concerned with relationships as people think. There's a few parts that make me think this, ie: turn and walk away, cause we finally know now what our time here's about, we were not meant to be another face in the crowd. That makes me think the message is about how they've left behind 'normal' 9-5 lives, and being in the band gives them the opportunity to be spread their word etc, ie not another face in the crowd. "So I dropped out of my own race, a race with no finish line, no first or last place" Seems to me working at a job that is just letting you live. That's the way I see the song anyway

This song is about getting away from something that isn't offering you anything anymore. If it's about an ex then I think that he grew up and became more politically aware or at least gained direction in life and the other person hasn't grown at all and he's angry that they haven't, likely because it caused them to have a falling out.
