| This song is just saying that you're not the only one having a hard life but you should just keep your head up "because how you survive is what makes you who you are. And to not whine and so on. | |

| It's not the problems in your life and all the hard shit you go through that make you different and special and unique, fuck that, you have problems, so does every fucking person on the planet, it's how you deal with these problems that makes you who you are. Sounds like in addition to that there's a little story in there about someone who is on the verge of giving up because of all his shitty problems. His problems are beginning to be too much for him and he decides he's just going to give up on everything. Then it says that after just giving up on his hopes and dreams and quitting, he is having a good life now that there is nothing to give him problems and he's feeling better than ever before, but this is clearly not true as the song then goes into the "Life isn't like this" repeated over and over, stating that there is no real way out, and you really do have to 'survive' to find out who you really are and to be truly happy. To the dude that said this song is about saying shut the fuck up to emo bitches, you're clearly wrong, and I suspect you have some sort of grudge against these people that is based on little more than the way that you have been conditioned to believe that they act. I know many people that have had the emo-label slapped across their foreheads, and these people aren't the whiny kids you make them out to be. In fact, they are all a lot more accepting and mature than the you, judging by your comment, and none of them claim to be dark and depressing with hard lives, they are all quite happy actually, and the style and music associated with them is only a representation of a scene, like it or not, emo is widely associated with hardcore and it's almost impossible to differentiate between the two, and the kids dress that way for the exact same reason hardcore kids dress a particular way, and it's to say and prove that it doesn't fucking matter if they don't fucking fit in, because they belong to something much bigger than themselves and much bigger than most people even know. | |

| This song isnt trying to "fight" the "emo" culture. But rather, it speaks out about the individuals that think they are the only ones with problems. That does happen to describe a lot of emo people, but this song isnt saying that dealing with your problems in a way that is "different" is bad, because "how we survive is what makes us who we are". | |

| The only thing emo kids belong to is a silly-ass fashion trend, it's all just marketing. They don't belong to anything "much better than themselves and much bigger than most people even know" any more so than kids who were grunge or "sk8ers" in the 90s or even the hair metal kids in the 80s. And I'm sorry but when emo kids put up websites with pages upon pages of themselves cutting their arms, that's just some silly shit. It's all just so much teenage melodrama. Don't worry, when you graduate high school life gets better and you're realize how ridiculous and naive you sound. | |

| Yeah it's pretty much saying that no matter what you're going through, many people have already been through it and worse. It may suck but it's not the end of the world, and the lessons we take from these hardships help to shape us into the people we become. Rise Against is freaking amazing! | |

| I just want to say that aside from writing this fantastic song, Rise Against was a key factor in helping save 1-800-suicide( but I think they failed because the company who was going to fund it stabbed them in the back). | |

| I think this song is less about seeing the brighter side of things, and knowing that lots of people have problems just like, you, and is more about just realizing that the person you are today, was forged by overcoming all the shit life throws at you. SO you can wither bow and buckle under the pressure under the pressure, or you say, “I’m gonna be one steel-tempered SOB when this is all done.” It’s saying we are the sum of our lives. The good, the bad, and the damn awful. How we came through the bad times, and how tough we came out on the other side, that is the very core of what we are. Stretching the idea a little further, It’s almost as if they are say, “We are a re ability to survive the bad times.” It’s been said that life is mostly about the bad times, and those little spots of joy between them are what let us survive the rough spots. So if, “how we survive is what makes us who we are” then are we not joy? Yeah, I stretched the hell out of that one, but this is also part of a song. It’s ability to make you think, deeply, about your own life, and the lives around you, that is a sign of a great song. It should also be noted that there are a few mistakes on the lyrical side of things presented here, some of them like putting in a instead of and, mean little, but others are bigger, I SHIRK my obligations I EXCEL quitting early should be noted I geuss. | |
