Yeah, I originally thought that this was the immediate meaning of the song, until my dad enlightened me. It's apparently about a homosexual, he's not waiting on a lady, just a "friend." Someone to relate to, someone to "protect." Sometimes its especially hard for homosexuals to feel excepted and loved and thats what hes singing about. Not what I thought of at first, but makes sense to me. Lovely song, one of their finest.

this song is pure fucking great. the sax really inspires it to pull of different tricks and then when that falsetto voice comes in (doo doo doo...etc.) that's what the song is right there yeah right there definately

Not your typical Stones song for sure. Very vulnerable and honest words from the weary singer of the song. That is Sonny Rollins playing the great saxaphone at the end.

Only 2 posts for this song? This song is absolutely beautiful. The sax part of the song is phenominal, does anyone know of any other Stones songs where there is a lot of sax. I'm thinking Can't You Hear me Knocking does as well.

The sax is ok...but every time I hear sax I think Kenny G, and it's ruined for me. Sax is such a cheesy sounding instrument to me. Anyway, the song isn't about homosexuality. Why do people have to be so graphic, like perverts on the wall? Didn't you hear the lyrics? "Making love and breaking hearts It is a game for youth" The song's about tiredness and weariness. It's about wishing for no more bullshit. It's about finding someone who expects nothing of you. Maybe even someone you can just sit with and don't even have to say a word to. The song is about the island you want to get to after an age of swimming in a rough and vast ocean. It's not about bending some guy over and doing up the bum, you perverts. And to all the teenage psuedo analysts, it's not about drugs, for fck sake ok.

He's not looking for a woman, you know a whore, a girlfriend, etc. He just feels better sometimes to be with a friend that will listen to his problems.
