Ok, at this point of the song, there is a cool bass note that sorta jumps out of nowhere
but sounds excellent. For those of you who don't have bass accompaniment & would like
to interject this chord I kinda just discovered, to play around with, see if you like
it. It can be sort of a pain in the butt at first, but if u have the fingers and wanna try it...

I suppose there aren't many posts because the song is so literal. It means exactly what it says, but to me it is a metaphor for a broader dilemma we face as a society. The pursuit of the almighty dollar is ruining a great many facets of our society. As Rush so adeptly points out, morning radio used to be about the MUSIC, now you are lucky to hear two songs in 30 minutes of disc jockeys promoting this or that "Of salesmen, Of salesman" Money is just plain ruining entertainment. There are twice as many commercials every hour on TV as compared to 20 years ago, you can't go to a ballgame anymore with the kids without spending $100 or more, ever see ticket prices for children's entertainment like Dora the Explorer? They cost more than concert tickets!! One has to wonder if capitalism will absolutely ruin the spirit of artistic and athletic expression.

To me this is a song about love. A DJ out there behind the sceens of radio and a woman. Her day begins by hearing his friendly voice and him playin' their favorite songs, cause he has the magic to do that. He is a part of her daily routine and he makes her day. The invisable airways is crackled by the life meaning, the power of thier love. She and he are the only ones that know. The echos of salesmen are the echos of her favoirte DJ's voice doing the commericals. That is what I think.... o il give u what it really means begin the day with a friendly voice is waking up to a morning show the ivisible airways is the radio waves to ur atenna that plays the music echos sounds with salesman are commercials on the radio

Personally, I believe that the song is about the music industry, in general. It's saying that music can be a wonderful form of expression, and can make life better, when made for the right reasons. It's saying that the music industry can ruin music. It can fill people with the wish to make music soley for money, for profit, and no other reason (and the words of the profits were written on the studio hall... and echoes with the sounds of salesmen) and that this makes many musicians compromise their art, their music, for the money (glittering prizes and endless compromises...). It's also saying that it doesn't need to be this way, "it's really just a matter of your honesty". It's up to the musicians to make the music for the right reasons.

wow! This song is brilliant, just read the lyrics again, while listening to the song. "All this machinery making modern music..." is obviously refering to the rave and electronica culture, yet they show some form of respect by singing "...can still be open-hearted." Philosophic_Musings and chibiweav are both 100% correct: this song is about the music industry, heartfelt music etc. Great song.

The line about "Modern machinery making modern music" isn't about the tape recorder, IMHO. It's about the synthesizer--an instrument which is extensively used in this song. At one time, the synthesizer was seen as the death-knell of rock-and-roll, just as the drum machine did, and for mostly the same reasons. However, the synthesizer didn't turn out to be as detrimental to rock music as its general lack of substance did. That's what this song is about--popular music's lack of substance is going to harm it in the long run: "But glittering prizes/And endless compromises/Shatter the illusion of integrity." It's a warning to the music industry--one which they have ignored with much prejudice, and now they're paying the price.

Whoops, I forgot that the actual name of this song is "The Spirit of Radio", so I didn't realize it was here already and submitted my own lyrics. Anyway, this song is about radio stations, the way they should be, and the way they generally are. It starts out with the ideal image of radio, how the listener could turn on the radio at any time and hear music they loved for no cost. However, the song goes on to depict the overcommercialization of the radio industry, and how many stations care much more about making money now than they do about playing music. At any rate, it's a great song, definitely among my top 5 favorites. The guitar work is fantastic, Peart's drumming is top-notch as always, and Geddy Lee proves again that he's one of the few lead singers who could make such high-pitched vocals sound smooth and effortless.

This is partly a tribute to the former Toronto FM station, CFNY 102.1, the "Spirit of Radio" (their tagline.) I was a teenager growing up listening to CFNY circa 1980-86. There was nothing else like it on Toronto airwaves, if not in all of North America. The DJs basically played what they liked - New Wave, Punk, New World Music, etc., and a lot of Brittish stuff. It stood in great contrast to all of the other FM "Rock" stations, at times appearing seemingly amateurish, yet intellectual at the same time. I can not adequately descibe the wonderful feelings I would have, as a teenager, discovering some great obscure song that they would start playing. It was like a breath of fresh air putting that station on in the mornings. I gather that that is what Neil Peart felt when he would put it on -it was just such a contrast to all of the other stations, where it was the same top 40 songs with stupid contests all of the time. For some archived shows, visit the fanpage http://www.spiritofradio.ca/
