Home A Adams, Ryan Sweet Illusions Chords Guitar Tab

Ryan Adams - Sweet Illusions
from the record "Cold Roses"
Tabs submitted by Tim Prizer (tim_prizer@yahoo.com)
Questions, comments, corrections welcome. And if anyone can tab out the very nice
electric guitar in the background, that would be great...
Chords used (standard tuning - eBGDAE):
Bm 234422
G 330023
D 2320xx
Em 000220
Asus4 032200
*It sounds as though Ryan mutes the A string at some points on the G and the little e
string on the D, but it sounds fine either way.
Intro
[D] [Bm]
[D] [Bm]
[D] [Bm]
[Bm] [G]
[G] [D]
[Bm]Let me go I'm only [G]letting you down
[D]I 've got nothing to [G]say to you now
[Bm]I lose the feelings that are [G]weighing me down
When I'm [D]safe
[Bm]It's turning morning all the [G]birds sing
[D]I'm not complicating [G]anything
[Bm]I'll have another then I'll [G]go to bed
But I'll [D]dream of you
Cause it's [Bm]almost over
And it's [Asus4]almost gone
CHORUS
And I can feel the [D]sweet ill[G]usion, coming
[Bm]Sweet con[G]fusion, honey
[D]Sweet ill[G]usion coming [Bm]down [Asus4]
And I ain't got nothing but love for you now
[Em] [Bm] [Em] [Bm] [Em] [Bm] [G] [Asus4]
[Bm]You and I used to [G]shine like a jewel
But [D]time's been nothing to [G]us but cruel
[Bm]So play it out and never [G]play the fool
Cause you'll [D]lose every time
[Bm]We were nothing, we were [G]only the past
[D]Hard times like [G]that don't last
[Bm]I've been forgiven, I have [G]been surpassed
By my [D]heart
Have you?
Cause it's [Bm]almost over
Yeah it's [Asus4]almost gone
And I can feel the [D]sweet ill[G]usion coming
[Bm]Sweet con[G]fusion, oh
[D]Sweet ill[G]usion coming [Bm]down [Asus4]
And I ain't got nothing but love for you
BRIDGE
[Em]Love for [G]you I can't [D]use
And [Em]lonely nights [G]multiplied by the [Asus4]blues
That I can't [Asus4]resolve [Asus4]
(very light picking on this verse)
[Bm]You never knew me but I [G]did my best
[D]I'm just lonely in[G]side I guess
[Bm]You gave me everything you [G]really tried
[D]Thanks
[Bm]If we were nothing and we're [G]only the past
[D]Then I'm just living in a [G]dream I guess
A [Bm]long black dream that [G]takes me down the river to [D]you
Where it's [Bm]almost over
And we're [Asus4]almost gone
And I can feel the [D]sweet ill[G]usion coming
[Bm]Sweet con[G]fusion, honey
[D]Sweet ill[G]usion coming [Bm]down
Well I can feel the [D]sweet ill[G]usion coming
[Bm]Sweet con[G]fusion, honey
[D]Sweet ill[G]usion coming [Bm]down [Asus4]
And I ain't got nothing but love for you now
[D] [Bm] [D] [Bm] [D] [Bm] [Em]

Oh, I also want to add it sounds like his best wasn't good enough for her, but she tried to make it work.

"Let me go, I'm only letting you down." He feels like he wasn't good enough for her. "I'll have another, then I'll go to bed." He still loves her and he's drinking himself tired and then going to bed at night and dreaming of her. He obviously can't get her out of his mind. "You and I used to shine like a jewel ..." The relationship was all-encompassing and grand at one point, but it eventually soured, for whatever reason and that initial magic is no longer there ... but the love still is (at least on his part). "We were nothing, we were only the past." He's lying to himself here, saying that the relationship is done and over with and he's moving on. He's saying it's almost gone, but then admits he's confused and he still loves her. Seems he's trying to justify the end. "You never knew me but I did my best I'm just lonely inside I guess You gave me everything You really tried, thanks If we were nothing and we're only the past Well I'm just living in a dream I guess" That's pretty self-explanatory, to me. He finally, again, admits that the relationship couldn't have meant nothing and you can't just chalk it up to "lesson learned." He's obviously still lonely and thinks about her often.
