While many of you think that this song is about a woman/woman relationship [same sex, whatever], it's actually about Sarah's aunt, who died

from vh1 storytellers, Sarah said that this song talks about her "problems in dealing with feeling responsible for everyone else." adia is her (to why she named her adia, she just said that she likes the sound of it), and she talks to herself with this song. eeky people would actually think that its a gay song (theres no one left to finger), but said, theyre eeky so theres no surprise there

The "comment adder" if you will, asked me this question: "What does this song mean to you?" Simple: It means everything thats beautiful. Sarah is right up there with Lauryn and DMband

I suppose this song could be about/to a friend, any friend, who was having trouble believing in herself. We all need such reassurance sometimes - someone to tell us we're on the right path, even if it feels like we're stumbling. I especially love the reassurance "we are born innocent" - a good affirmation against the idea that we are all born sinful, and remain sinful. Such a gentle, positive song.

It always seemed to me that she was talking to herself on a conscious level. Adia is the name that she gives her mental projection of herself. It sounds like she is trying to decide if she has become the person she wants to be.

The line "'Cause there's no one left to finger" is followed by "there's no one here to blame". She's not talking about fingering anyone... she's saying that there is no one else to point a finger at - she can't blame anyone.

This song seems to look into a different type of love. She may have had feelings for another woman. Nothing ugly or sick just feelings of a connection between two women. She can't feel the deep desire or even sexual undercurrents the other woman feels. Wonderful song as always expected from Sarah.

I agree with ChaosFluro24; but moreover for me it is not necessarily about finding out if she became the person she wants/wanted to be yet. I think it's one of those songs you sing to yourself when you have got a "quiet minute" and lay back and just think about yourself. Like that you do a monologue in a calm athmosphere.

"I pull you from your tower I take away your pain and show you all the beauty you possess if you'd only let yourself believe that" If all of us in the world could think like that...the world would be beautiful!

When you finger someone you blame them, as in "finger the suspect in the line-up." It's a common saying, unless you are 13.

To me, this song is about feeling as though you have let someone down. Sarah is singing about Adia, a person who is troubled. Sarah feels responsible for Adia... she feels obligated to be Adia's should to lean on, and she tries to help Adia but Adia just isn't able to heal. Thus, Sarah feels like she has failed Adia. Also, I think that maybe "Adia" is really Sarah. Sarah is singing about how she has tried to love herself and feel whole, but to no avail. She's empty and lost, and she is upset that she has lost herself. My favorite line in this song is, "I leave you with your misery/a friend who won't betray". I can really understand that. When you feel so alone and sad, all you have is your misery. Even though your misery hurts, it's always there, no matter what. This song is beautiful. Sarah is amazing. I love her.

To me, I think Adia is Sarah as a child. I believe that this song is a communication to your own inner child where you are giving yourself some reassurance. As we humans grow, we end up doing stupid things (even sinful) which later complicates our head full of guilt sometimes. If we struggle a little to forgive ourselves, such as reassuring that since "we are born innocent....we are still innocent" after all. Sure, it is "easy to falter", but really "does it matter?" We are all the same kid we always were still growing up. I have heard from a movie that the most important thing is to always keep your childish innocence. I believe that this song portrays that message. I really love this angelic song of reassurance; makes me cry sometimes too. A true classic next to 'Angel'.

This is a beautiful song by a genius songwriter. However, I do ponder the meaning of the lyrics. The references in Adia to innocence - particularly "we are STILL innocent" indicate that innocence in somehow in question. Also, the lines, "I search myself and everyone to see where we went wrong,"and, "Adia I thought that we could make it," sound like something a person would say to an ex-lover or love interest. The reference to pulling Adia from a tower makes me think of the common American cultural stories of rescuing a trapped princess. I don't think that the "finger" line means anything other than placing blame. In response to dragonflyeyes: **THERE IS PLENTY WRONG WITH LESBIAN RELATIONSHIPS**

people, I have been having this debate forever. I really think this is a lesbian song, I don't mean to sound like a perv, but I can't get past the "there's no one left to finger" part. I think that this is about a lesbian relationship, (maybe not a personal one of sarah's) but about maybe a made-up one. That is why she is talking about staying innocent and being friends also... well whatever it is about it's a beautiful song, and if it is a lesbian song its cool to hear a different twist on a love song.

I think Adia is just a random name and has no importance so YAY. I think this can be interpretted as a lesbian song. It can also be interpretted as all those above (and I doubt "there's no one left to finger" is a reference to sex.. ^ refer to LemonFreshPineSol) But everytime I hear this song, I always thought it was about a mother/daughter relationship. Please note I have NO idea about Sarah McLachlan or her life so yay. But it does sound like that to me. And you know, doesn't it just make the song MORE beautiful it can be interpretted so many ways?

okay, my take, isnt "theres no one else to finger" suppose to mean, like no one else to blame? whats with the sexual references? i thot it was pretty strait cut, that line. i think, its about her, disappointing someone really important. and telling that person, that she admits it, here comes the part "theres no one else left to finger" - that its her fault. but shes asking for a chance, saying everyones innocent, everyone makes mistakes. i THINK. heh. =)

First of all, there is *NOTHING WRONG WITH LESBIAN RELATIONSHIPS*. Now that that's over with, I can get off of my soapbox. This song isn't about a lesbian relationship. I heard that it was to her friend who was in a relationship with the man she (Sarah) would later marry, but I could be wrong.

This song is NOT about lesbian relationships or lesbian sex. It wouldn't make the song any less powerful if it were, but the fac tis Sarah was dating her bass player and her best friend was dating her drummer. All of them lived together and the drummer (who is now Sarah's husband and father of her child) and Sarah started a relationship. Sarah felt she had hurt her friend. The song is about her feelings and apologies to her.
