| i don't understand the problem people have with this album - ok the sound has changed but it is still recognisable as STD. The lyrics are still awesome, and there are some amazing songs on it, just don't listen to it expecting a re-run of their previous albums but yeah, this song. i think it is political, with politicians filling peoples minds with confusing and contradictory things. and chris is saying that people "stare at the ceiling and play dead" and don't pay attention to the world around them. Anyone agree with that idea? | |

| My take on the song is that its about someone whom was very dependent emtionally on another. "The Monkey" is in reference to the old saying tha "the monkey on my back". This old refers to problems, day to day, that we all deal with as normal people. If Im in a financial bind and someone asks me how Im doing, then I may reply "I got the 'monkey' on my back man", and so on. But aside from the "hello me, are you in there" line, I really do believe that the song is actually about a girl that sank into a deep depression over a guy whom she apparently had a deep involvment with, but in the end she found that her castle was built of mere sand, or in other words he put on a big front of what he was all about. "he sold you a dream, and carved you up like meat". He "locked her heart behind mars because she doesnt even want to think about moving on and in turn, therefore opening her heart to someone else. Furthermore, I tink its about a heart break, because in the corus it says "dont try to ask a doctor whats going on inside your head". Now we all know that there are many treatments for almost ailment, desease, sickness, whatever, but theres no medicine for a heartache. So when she "awoke to his game" that he was playing on her, "The Monkey" saw an invitation to climb aboard, and shes been gradually rolls down hill from there. | |

| I'm not really sure why lots of you guys are saying that the new album isn't up to their standards...I like this album. I think it’s different from a lot of what’s out there. I got a lot more of a catchy popish vibe from the band when they came out with stay what you are then I do now. Not that that’s a bad thing or anything, I just think that this album is demonstrating how the band evolved artistically, but that’s just my opinion (= | |

| I think Chris is singing this song to himself, and I think he's telling himself not to complain about feeling sad or going crazy ("the monkey will bite") because everyone eventually does. | |
