| I kind of half-remember reading in an article that this song is about a friend of Jake's (called Mary) who was mercilessly teased about her weight. This of course did real damage to her self esteem and the song was written to lift her up, as it were. | |

| this is one of my favourites off the album. i reckon its about a guy (probably gay) talking to his best friend Mary, who's been hurt a lot by her boyfriend(s). he's saying that even if she breaks up with them, she'll get over it and he'll always be there for her. it reminds me of me and my best friend - it makes me really sad when she's upset - and how i'd do anything to make her happy again. | |

| As mentioned, this song is about Jake Shears' best friend, Mary, who actually ended up dying of a brain aneurism, fairly recently. Jake Shears has a tattoo on his left arm that reads "Mary", for what it's worth. Poor boy. :( | |

| i like how this song works. a very modern elton john. also although it was written for a woman named mary, mary is also queer slang used in much the same context as girlfriend. | |

| I like this song. I really am warming to the Scissor Sisters with each song they do. I wasn't sure about 'Take Your Mama Out' but now i like that, too. And i couldn't stop singing 'Laura' when that came out. 'Mary' is less upbeat, and it actually sounds like something Elton John could have sung but it has a moden twist. It's different from the last two singles. I like it, and i think the lead singer is rather gorgeous. It's the blue eyes! I think this song was written for a friend advising them about relationship difficulties and reassuring them that they'll always be there for them if they need them to be. | |

| i guess we would all like a friend like the person singing, who would always stick by them no matter what, and who would put their friend's happiness before their own | |
