Secret Machines lived in a one-room loft with all of their music gear at one end of the room when they first moved to NYC. This song paints a picture of waking up with the sun coming in the windows, shining on the guitars, keyboards, drums and amps at the far end of the room, reminding them of why they were there. That enough is inspiration to start writing. They begin to emerge from writer's block (as documented in "Nowhere Again.")

I think "cellophane flowers" is a reference to Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds. "Cellophane flowers of yellow and green Towering over your head Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes And she's gone"

This is such a great song. The lyrics are so beautiful and the music matches it wonderfully. Great harmonizing by the Curtis brothers and awesome drumming by Garza. Good stuff. I'm looking forward to hopefully see this live someday, I've heard their live shows are the best. Excitement.

yeah those artists are really deep and inspired, i just wish they could use their power of presenting visions to people, for some more optimistic visions to try and show solutions to that which they wine about, though that can be hard and leave people depressed say if the government doesn't pay attention and leaves the seeming reality lowly

yeah, i think the cellophane flowers part was a beatles reference. txfilmguy1: your explanation is very in-depth, but i think it's just too detailed maybe. i don't think the meaning of this song is that deep. i think PittsColt pretty much got it. anyways, is it just me, or are these lyrics kind of radiohead-ish? haha, cool song. anyone have suggestions for songs i should download by them? if i like 'em, i'll buy a record of theirs.

Maybe the cellophane flowers part means they were never big in the drug scene, how people seem to get lost in it "now we're lost in nowhere now" and "warming the blood flow with poison, i don't know why" like he doesn't know why people do this to themselves. And people who party 24/7 are lost, "you'd be surprised how we race, while our lives erased." Makes sense, turning away form the woman, etc. Makes sense to me at least.

As a budding new band intent on making a go at a career, they found themselves in an all-familiar situation; a brand new record deal followed by a severe case of writer's block. Why is it inspiration ends when success is handed to you? This is about dealing with lack of inspiration when you most need it, and all of the distractions that can keep them from their goal. Everyone has ignored that "Cellophane flowers" is a direct reference to The Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky." He's saying that he feels inspired lyrics don't come as easy to him as they seemed to come to one of his heroes, John Lennon. ("Cellophane flowers never happened for me") His role in life seems more about a day job than his chosen field - making music. The need for a day job to pay rent, along with other distractions... girlfriends ("She motions to me, I start turning away"), and alcohol ("Warming the blood flow with poison") are blurring his vision of his ultimate goal, and he finds himself back in the rat race instead of rising above it. ("You'd be surprised, how we race, While our lives, erased.") The song becomes its own irony in that it captures the frustration of writer's block so eloquently.

You'd be surprised how we race,While our lives erased- this means that when you have nothing to lose you'll do anything to get by. There's a woman...Trying to keep up-i think this is about some one(in this case a woman duh) who is forced to do things she would rather not in order to "keep up" with the world and its greed as in "lifting her dress up". the first verse is about how he feels hes wasting away his life doing things that are suposed to be normal because society tells him to"filling my time share" also there is a huge drug refrence "with poison i dont know why" i think this is a great song that expreses the pointlessness of the things we do.

'You'd be surprised how we race While our lives erased' We get so caught up with stupid things in our life. We need to slow down and look at the beautiful things and stop racing. 'Warming the blood flow with poison I don't know why' possibly about drugs. i love this song.

before i always considered the "cellophane flowers" to be a false reality. Flowers are real, and ones made of cellophane are just a cheap imitation of reality. I thought he was saying that he has always lived a very real life. *shrug* The druggie hippie things works too though

Pretty much all of the songs on this album are about loneliness, and this one is no exception. The first like, "cellophane flowers never happened for me", is a refrence (most likely) to the hippie drug culture. Obviously, the liberation the Secret Machines were looking for when they turned to drugs and sex never happened. This song is them finally realizing that. But of course that sounds pretentious, it's just a good rock song.
