This is my translation of this tune and it's pretty straight forward.
Standard tuning, no capo. The verse and chorus have only one chord with
changing base notes and there is a brief bridge near the end which is a
piece of cake. In my opinion, 7m3 performs this song so well because the
vocals are sung with such emotion, with the back up picking guitar adding
to this, and the cymbals create an effective and spontaneous build up
leading to the chorus. I haven't heard it in a while but I believe I
remember an organ in the background. Anyways, have fun and if you have

You can probably figure out the strumming pattern on your own. This
is the same chord with three different base notes. A tip is to hit the
base note signally then strum the chord a few times again hitting each
base note signally a few times during the progression. The chord
leading into each chorus is an E major which replaces the chord with
the E base note as shown above.

Same kinda thing as the verse but more powerful. I strum the chorus
as opposed to the verse where I pick one or two string at a time.

This is the bridge between the two choruses at the end of the
song. This part should be played softly.

What a great song!!!every time i listen to it i changes my mind on what it means.every lyric takes me different places in my life where it means different things.but i think the best thing about is why it goes"time is all the luck that you ll need" which means you will still have time to make a desion on things.What a song

The premise of the song's chorus is taken from the play "Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett. It features a character named Lucky who never speaks through the entire play except once. He uses the phrase "divine apathy" in his speech. Other than that, his tongue is tied because his master won't let him speak. I also think I heard somewhere that Jason Ross had a friend who referred to himself as mean Mr. Mustard and that's where the verses come from. Also, don't forget the bridge: "I'm the wave that crashes From a sea that turns itself Inside out every chance I get to See what it's like in Hell" To me this song has always meant that if you hold everything inside, you create your own personal hell. The chorus is possibly the most powerful lyrics ever, especially the way they're sung. Anyway, long story short (too late) this is an amazing song.

its about being happy with what you have and not wanting what you can't have...in my mind that is why it says if i stay lucky then my tounge will stay tied, for me it would be not wanting to tell someone you like them if you can't have them but im sure it can take on many meanings....or something like that :s

I love this song.. in fact, i just heard it today for the first time.. but i just feel the lyrics sooo much.. "And if I stay Lucky then my tongue will stay tied, and I won’t betray the things that I hide. There’s not enough years underneath this belt, for me to admit the way that I felt. " It is just me...

good song, kinda sounds like hes talking to a homeless person (mr mustard).. that has gone through a lot more than he has, mr mustard says to him: 'hey you got it better than me, don't worry'

they need to add the bridge to the lyric post.... anyway, i think this song is about a guy who sees the world for what it is and really dislikes it. he is talking to an old man who probably felt the same way as he grew up. But the old man (mean mr. mustard) tells the boy not to continue living angry at the world for what it is because there is nothing you can do about it. although very few people actually see the world for what it is, a cruel and corrupt place, there is still nothing we can do about it. So, mean mr mustard is telling the boy, "son, i was in the same position you are and i know how you feel. Dont live your life hating everything and not enjoying anything. dont try to fight it, just enjoy what you can, but dont conform."

Somebody help me out here......I really like this song...the way it sung and the music....im trying to figure out what it means though. I think that there is this younger, angry man who is pissed at the world. and there is this older cranky, yet wise man, (mr. mustard) that says to the younger man "you can't continue to be bitter against the world. it only makes your life more miserable. trust me i know, i hve been that direction" and the older guy continues to say that "the negative attitude and disdain for the world is contagious". If he's lucky, he will keep his mouth shut and not let out all the bitterness he holds inside.... any other ideas?
