| I don't know how much faith to have in Shakira, but I like to think this song is in satire. The things she lists are a combination of bad things, really. Superficial aspects of love, codependence, gender roles, consumerism... Going out on dancing on Friday and then to church on Sunday reminds me of the cycle of sinning at night and begging for repentance in the morning. Needing arms to hide from muses suggests being sheltered from one's own creative self, in addition to the line about writing more happy songs. The line, "in a world full of strangers" could be poking fun at how in our culture we tend to be alienated and let our neighbors be strangers and be afraid of everyone. | |
