Not to be picky, but he's saying "we'll leave a sign so anyone can find us", not a "sun"

I believe your on to something Trivial. I don't want to go into depth and explan my theory, but I think it's about falling in love. Many lines in the song would back this up.

it is infact, "let me be the fire in your hand" not head, as is what is listed here.

I personally think that this song is about a man who loves someone who is afraid to love. In the first verse he begins using "Beyond the sun" as a metaphor for love, and he questions her as to whether she has been in love. In the second verse, he mentionas regretfully that he has fallen in love with her too fast, and she is still lagging behind unsure of where to go. So in the chorus he's asking her to come with him to "A place beyond the sun" or asking her to come and love him and reassure her that it will be better.

The line "Let me be the fire in your hand" suggests that the song has something to do with marriage or at the very least a strong commitment, in many religions including catholisism and hinduism fire metaphors are often used for commitment and unity, in certain hindu wedding rituals fire is a focal point of the ceremony.
